This booklet is devoted to the thermodynamic and kinetic description of first-order phase transitions. In general, the matter of the world exists in different phases. Normally phase ctlanges take place in ther­ modynamic equilibrium, which will be considered here. Typically,the system is rapidly quenched from a one-phase thermal equilibrium state to a nonequilibrium situation. During the so-ca lIed equilibrium phase transformation process the quenched supersaturated system evolves from the nonequilibrium state to an equilibrium one which consists of two coexisting phases. In aseries of books on phase transitions and critical phenomena (DDMB, GREEN, lEBDWITZ, 1972 - 19B3) an immense amount of material to different aspects of ttlis topic is summarized. The other type of phase transitions takes place in systems far from equilibrium. Due to 'the nonequi1ibrium boundary conditions and the flu­ xes from the environment into the system the final state of this so­ called nonequilibrium phase transition is a stable nonequilibrium si­ tuation. Such interesting processes (e. g. pattern formation, multista­ bi1ity) do not appear only in physics but also in chemistry, meteorolo­ gy, biology and many areas of engineering. Concerning questions in this context we recommend the reader to the monographs by HAKEN (197B), and EBElING, FEISTEl (1982). An overview of the problems of recent interest in this field is given in the Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Irreversible Processes and Dissipative Structures, edited by EBElING and Ul8RICHT (1986).

Phase transitions in which crystalline solids undergo structural changes present an interesting problem in the interplay between the crystal structure and the ordering process. This text, intended for readers with some prior knowledge of condensed-matter physics, emphasizes the basic physics behind such spontaneous structural changes in crystals. Starting with the relevant thermodynamic principles, the book discusses the nature of order variables and their collective motion in a crystal lattice; in a structural phase transition a singularity in such a collective mode is responsible for the lattice instability, as revealed by soft phonons. This mechanism is analogous to the interplay of a charge-density wave and a periodically deformed lattice in low-dimensional conductors. The text also describes experimental methods for modulated crystal structures and gives examples of structural changes in representative systems. The book is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical, part includes such topics as: the Landau theory of phase transitions; statistics, correlations and the mean-field approximation; pseudospins and their collective modes; soft lattice modes and pseudospin condensates; lattice imperfections and their role in the phase transitions of real crystals. Abstract: Non-equilibrium physics in model systems with long-range Kac-type interactions is investigated. There are at least two advantages to working with long-range, near-mean-field models: (1) analytic calculations are tractable and (2) predictions can be made that are independent of system details. The latter gives hope that the phenomenology of simple models reflects real systems with effective long-range interactions (e.g., polymers and possibly metals). In this dissertation I address two important phase transition processes: unstable growth and nucleation. The former occurs when a system is quenched into an unstable regime. The Cahn-Hilliard-Cook (CHC) linear theory is a description of the early time ordering dynamics following a critical quench and is applicable to systems with long-range interactions. I generalize the CHC linear theory in two ways. First, I construct a systematic perturbation expansion beyond the CHC theory in order to describe continuous ordering at later times; unlike prior work, the expansion is not subject to ultraviolet divergences. Second, in phase transitions which break a spatial symmetry, I demonstrate that a CHC-like theory can emerge even if the CHC assumptions are not met at the time of the quench. Nucleation dynamics describes the process of escape from metastable equilibrium. Systems with long-range interactions have a well defined spinodal limit of metastability. I derive analytical results describing the character of nucleation when the system is quenched deep into the metastable phase, near the spinodal. In the case of the fluid-to-solid transition in three dimensions and greater, the nucleating droplets are predicted to have a spherically symmetric onion structure, completely unlike the stable phase crystal symmetry. I also discuss nucleating droplets for solid-to-solid transitions in two dimensions.
