The Palgrave International Handbook of Women and Outdoor Learning

The Palgrave International Handbook of Women and Outdoor Learning PDF Author: Tonia Gray
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319535501
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 928

Book Description
This Handbook serves as a starting point for critical analysis and discourse about the status of women in outdoor learning environments (OLEs). Women choose to participate actively in outdoors careers, many believing the profession is a level playing field and that it offers alternatives to traditional sporting activities. They enter outdoor learning primarily on the strength of their enthusiasm for leading and teaching in natural environments and assume the field is inclusive, rewarding excellence regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status, disability, or ethnicity. However, both research and collective experiences in OLEs suggest that many women feel invisible, relegated, marginalized, and undervalued. In response to this marginalization, this Handbook celebrates the richness of knowledge and practices of women practitioners in OLEs. Women scholars and practitioners from numerous fields, such as experiential outdoor education, adventure education, adventure therapy, and gender studies, explore the implications of their research and practice using poignant examples within their own disciplines. These insights emerge from similar life experiences as women and outdoor leaders in the 1970s to the present. Social inequalities still abound in OLEs, and the Handbook ensures that the contributions of women are highlighted as well as the work that needs to be done to make these spaces inclusive. Global in perspective and capacious in content, this one-stop volume is an indispensable reference resource for a diverse range of academics, including students and researchers in the fields of education, psychology, sociology, gender studies, geography, and environment studies, as well as the many outdoors fields.

If you needed hot water it had to be heated up in the copper or on the wood stove – and first the fire had to be lit and the water bucketed from the tanks. Mim at aged 4, remembers the soldiers arriving home from WW1 – at the local railway station to meet the soldiers- flags waving; a lot of cheering; A Band playing. When the Spanish flu hit in 1919 – her mother, Edie, acted as a visiting local nurse.

Coomooroo?Our Legacy

Coomooroo? Our Legacy PDF Author: Sue Kapperer
Publisher: Balboa Press
ISBN: 1452512620
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 87

Book Description
Jeff and Pat Sheather have lived a good life, surrounded by success, love, family, and a community of people who have helped them on their journey. To celebrate their lives, one of their daughter's reached out to their friends and family and asked them to share some of their favourite stories. The result is Coomooroo-Our Legacy, a collection of shared memories-but not necessarily truths. Drawn from colleagues, friends, and family, these memories document the journey of the Sheathers. Moving from the rough beginnings of their early years to their nationwide successes and then retirement, this is their story, as told by those who love them the most. Jeff endured hardship as a young child, but took control of his life in his early teens. He left school, landed a dream job, and met Pat, the love of his life. Eleven children and four properties later, they had established their position in the Angus Stud community. For more than a decade, Jeff and Pat were at the top of their game. They achieved the highest accolades possible within their industry and made many lifelong friends along the way. Their lives have been remarkable, and they have touched many over the years. It was those friendships that made this project a possibility, and in these words, Sue brings her father's advice to life: "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." And theirs is a very good story.
