Book Description
Lilah’s father taught her to be afraid of the world, but now he's sending her off to university in a strange town far from home. Nestled in the heart of South Africa's Eastern Cape, Grahamstown is a place built on secrets and some of those secrets are deeper and older than Lilah can imagine. While she tries to adjust to her new freedom and navigate her first year of study, her father's own secrets land him in legal trouble and she's abruptly left stranded and alone. Of all people to step in and help, it's her arrogant classmate, Kalin. He's argumentative, brooding and annoyingly mysterious. But he's also surprisingly kind and when they’re ensconced in his study, surrounded by old books and strange talismans, it's easy to forget how she's been warned he's bad news. The longer she stays in Grahamstown, and with Kalin, the more her reality seems to unravel. Is the town haunted? Are leylines real? Why is she suddenly having vivid dreams of a fantasy world she thought she’d made up? What was her father hiding about her childhood? Who is Kalin really, and what will loving him cost her?

Practical Applications of Medical Geology

Practical Applications of Medical Geology PDF Author: Malcolm Siegel
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030538931
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 932

Book Description
This edited volume provides a framework for integrating methods and information drawn from geological and medical sciences and provides case studies in medical geology to illustrate the usefulness of this framework for crafting environmental and public health policies related to natural materials. The relevance of medical geology research to policy decisions is a topic rarely discussed, and this volume attempts to be a unique source for researchers and policy makers in the field of medical geology in addressing this gap in practical medical geology applications. The book's four sections establish this framework in detail using risk assessment, case studies, data analyses and specific medical geology techniques. Following an introduction to medical geology in the context of risk assessment and risk management, the second section discusses specific methods used in medical geology in the categories of geoscience, biomedicine, and data sources. The third section discusses the medical geology of natural materials, energy use, and environmental and workplace impacts. This section includes specific case studies in medical geology, and describes how the methods and data from the previous section are used in a medical geology analysis. The fourth section includes a guide to the medical geology literature and provides some examples of medical geology programs in Asia and Africa.

Weaving the Dark Web

Weaving the Dark Web PDF Author: Robert W. Gehl
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262347598
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
An exploration of the Dark Web—websites accessible only with special routing software—that examines the history of three anonymizing networks, Freenet, Tor, and I2P. The term “Dark Web” conjures up drug markets, unregulated gun sales, stolen credit cards. But, as Robert Gehl points out in Weaving the Dark Web, for each of these illegitimate uses, there are other, legitimate ones: the New York Times's anonymous whistleblowing system, for example, and the use of encryption by political dissidents. Defining the Dark Web straightforwardly as websites that can be accessed only with special routing software, and noting the frequent use of “legitimate” and its variations by users, journalists, and law enforcement to describe Dark Web practices (judging them “legit” or “sh!t”), Gehl uses the concept of legitimacy as a window into the Dark Web. He does so by examining the history of three Dark Web systems: Freenet, Tor, and I2P. Gehl presents three distinct meanings of legitimate: legitimate force, or the state's claim to a monopoly on violence; organizational propriety; and authenticity. He explores how Freenet, Tor, and I2P grappled with these different meanings, and then discusses each form of legitimacy in detail by examining Dark Web markets, search engines, and social networking sites. Finally, taking a broader view of the Dark Web, Gehl argues for the value of anonymous political speech in a time of ubiquitous surveillance. If we shut down the Dark Web, he argues, we lose a valuable channel for dissent.

Mathematical Modelling of Gas-Phase Complex Reaction Systems: Pyrolysis and Combustion

Mathematical Modelling of Gas-Phase Complex Reaction Systems: Pyrolysis and Combustion PDF Author:
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444640886
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1036

Book Description
Mathematical Modelling of Gas-Phase Complex Reaction Systems: Pyrolysis and Combustion, Volume 45, gives an overview of the different steps involved in the development and application of detailed kinetic mechanisms, mainly relating to pyrolysis and combustion processes. The book is divided into two parts that cover the chemistry and kinetic models and then the numerical and statistical methods. It offers a comprehensive coverage of the theory and tools needed, along with the steps necessary for practical and industrial applications. - Details thermochemical properties and "ab initio" calculations of elementary reaction rates - Details kinetic mechanisms of pyrolysis and combustion processes - Explains experimental data for improving reaction models and for kinetic mechanisms assessment - Describes surrogate fuels and molecular reconstruction of hydrocarbon liquid mixtures - Describes pollutant formation in combustion systems - Solves and validates the kinetic mechanisms using numerical and statistical methods - Outlines optimal design of industrial burners and optimization and dynamic control of pyrolysis furnaces - Outlines large eddy simulation of turbulent reacting flows
