Automatic Typographic-quality Typesetting Techniques

Automatic Typographic-quality Typesetting Techniques PDF Author: Mary Elizabeth Stevens
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Computerized typesetting
Languages : en
Pages : 116

Book Description
The report describes the current state-of-the-art in automation of graphic arts composition, starting from either of two sources: keyboard entry of manuscript material, or mechanized input in the form of available perforated tapes or magnetic tapes. The gamut is covered from one extreme in which a skilled keyboard operator performs all of the compositor functions required to operate a typesetting machine, to the other extreme in which the input merely provides text whether or not including designation of desired font changes, followed by a high degree of automation through all operations leading to type set for printing. Intermediate automation aids for the compositor functions, including characteristics of special-purpose digital computers and functions performed by typography programs for general-purpose digital computers, are reviewed. Characteristics of automatically operated typesetting mechanisms, including hot metal casting machines and photocomposers, slow, medium and high speed, are outlined. Applications of new techniques for typographic-quality automated composition that are of interest in scientific and technical information centers, libraries, and other documentation operations include sequential card camera listings, computer-generated KWIC indexes, photocomposition of technical journals, automatic composition of books containing both computer-produced tabular data and natural language texts, and the incorporation of mechanized processes throughout the publication cycle from the author's original manuscript preparation to the final printing. Made to Break

Made to Break PDF Author: Giles Slade
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674043758
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
Made to Break is a history of twentieth-century technology as seen through the prism of obsolescence. Giles Slade explains how disposability was a necessary condition for America's rejection of tradition and our acceptance of change and impermanence. This book gives us a detailed and harrowing picture of how, by choosing to support ever-shorter product lives, we may well be shortening the future of our way of life as well.

Production and Operations Management Systems

Production and Operations Management Systems PDF Author: Sushil Gupta
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1466507330
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
Since the beginning of mankind on Earth, if the "busyness" process was successful, then some form of benefit sustained it. The fundamentals are obvious: get the right inputs (materials, labor, money, and ideas); transform them into highly demanded, quality outputs; and make it available in time to the end consumer. Illustrating how operations relate to the rest of the organization, Production and Operations Management Systems provides an understanding of the production and operations management (P/OM) functions as well as the processes of goods and service producers. The modular character of the text permits many different journeys through the materials. If you like to start with supply chain management (Chapter 9) and then move on to inventory management (Chapter 5) and then quality management (Chapter 8), you can do so in that order. However, if your focus is product line stability and quick response time to competition, you may prefer to begin with project management (Chapter 7) to reflect the continuous project mode required for fast redesign rapid response. Slides, lectures, Excel worksheets, and solutions to short and extended problem sets are available on the Downloads / Updates tabs. The project management component of P/OM is no longer an auxiliary aspect of the field. The entire system has to be viewed and understood. The book helps students develop a sense of managerial competence in making decisions in the design, planning, operation, and control of manufacturing, production, and operations systems through examples and case studies. The text uses analytical techniques when necessary to develop critical thinking and to sharpen decision-making skills. It makes production and operations management (P/OM) interesting, even exciting, to those who are embarking on a career that involves business of any kind.

Electronic Distance Measurement

Electronic Distance Measurement PDF Author: Jean M. Rüeger
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642971962
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
The book has evolved from the author's continuing teaching of the subject and from two editions of a text of the same title. The first edition was published in 1978 by the School of Surveying, Universi ty of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Like its predecessors, this totally revised third edition is designed to make the subject matter more readily available to students proceeding to degrees in Survey ing and related fields. At the same time, it is a comprehensive refer ence book for all surveyors as well as for other professionals and scientists who use electronic distance measurement as a measuring tool. Great emphasis is placed on the understanding of measure ment principles and on proper reduction and calibration pro cedures. It comprises an extensive collection of essential formulae, useful tables and numerous literature references. After a review of the history of EDM instruments in Chapter 1, some fundamental laws of physics and units relevant to EDM are revised in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses the principles and applica tions of the pulse method, the phase difference method, the Doppler technique and includes an expanded section on interferometers. The basic working principles of electro-optical and microwave distance meters are presented in Chapter 4, with special emphasis on modu lation/demodulation techniques and phase measurement systems. Important properties of infrared emitting and lasing diodes are discussed.

Impactful Times

Impactful Times PDF Author: James R. Asay
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 331933347X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 676

Book Description
This book presents a history of shock compression science, including development of experimental, material modeling, and hydrodynamics code technologies over the past six decades at Sandia National Laboratories. The book is organized into a discussion of major accomplishments by decade with over 900 references, followed by a unique collection of 45 personal recollections detailing the trials, tribulations, and successes of building a world-class organization in the field. It explains some of the challenges researchers faced and the gratification they experienced when a discovery was made. Several visionary researchers made pioneering advances that integrated these three technologies into a cohesive capability to solve complex scientific and engineering problems. What approaches worked, which ones did not, and the applications of the research are described. Notable applications include the turret explosion aboard the USS Iowa and the Shoemaker-Levy comet impact on Jupiter. The personal anecdotes and recollections make for a fascinating account of building a world-renowned capability from meager beginnings. This book will be inspiring to the expert, the non expert, and the early-career scientist. Undergraduate and graduate students in science and engineering who are contemplating different fields of study should find it especially compelling.
