Digital Design Theory

Digital Design Theory PDF Author: Helen Armstrong
Publisher: Chronicle Books
ISBN: 1616894954
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
Digital Design Theory bridges the gap between the discourse of print design and interactive experience by examining the impact of computation on the field of design. As graphic design moves from the creation of closed, static objects to the development of open, interactive frameworks, designers seek to understand their own rapidly shifting profession. Helen Armstrong's carefully curated introduction to groundbreaking primary texts, from the 1960s to the present, provides the background necessary for an understanding of digital design vocabulary and thought. Accessible essays from designers and programmers are by influential figures such as Ladislav Sutnar, Bruno Munari, Wim Crouwel, Sol LeWitt, Muriel Cooper, Zuzana Licko, Rudy VanderLans, John Maeda, Paola Antonelli, Luna Maurer, and Keetra Dean Dixon. Their topics range from graphic design's fascination with programmatic design, to early strivings for an authentic digital aesthetic, to the move from object-based design and to experience-based design. Accompanying commentary assesses the relevance of each excerpt to the working and intellectual life of designers.

Kern's Process Heat Transfer

Kern's Process Heat Transfer PDF Author: Ann Marie Flynn
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119364175
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 613

Book Description
This edition ensures the legacy of the original 1950 classic, Process Heat Transfer, by Donald Q. Kern that by many is held to be the gold standard. This second edition book is divided into three parts: Fundamental Principles; Heat Exchangers; and Other Heat Transfer Equipment/ Considerations. Part I provides a series of chapters concerned with introductory topics that are required when solving heat transfer problems. This part of the book deals with topics such as steady-state heat conduction, unsteady-state conduction, forced convection, free convection, and radiation. Part II is considered by the authors to be the "meat" of the book, and the primary reason for undertaking this project. Other than minor updates, Part II remains relatively unchanged from the first edition. Notably, it includes Kern's original design methodology for double-pipe, shell-and-tube, and extended surface heat exchangers. Part II also includes boiling and condensation, boilers, cooling towers and quenchers, as well as newly designed open-ended problems. Part III of the book examines other related topics of interest, including refrigeration and cryogenics, batch and unsteady-state processes, health & safety, and the accompanying topic of risk. In addition, this part also examines the impact of entropy calculations on exchanger design. A 36-page Appendix includes 12 tables of properties, layouts and design factors. WHAT IS NEW IN THE 2ND EDITION Changes that are addressed in the 2nd edition so that Kern's original work continues to remain relevant in 21st century process engineering include: Updated Heat Exchanger Design Increased Number of Illustrative Examples Energy Conservation/ Entropy Considerations Environmental Considerations Health & Safety Risk Assessment Refrigeration and Cryogenics

Slash and Char as Alternative to Slash and Burn

Slash and Char as Alternative to Slash and Burn PDF Author: Christoph Steiner
Publisher: Cuvillier Verlag
ISBN: 3867274444
Category : Soil chemistry
Languages : en
Pages : 189

Book Description
The extraordinary fertility of manmade Terra Preta soils in the Brazilian Amazon provided the incentive to study the effects of soil charcoal amendments on soil fertility, nutrient cycling, and soil biology. The existence of Terra Preta suggests that tropical soils, which are notorious for being infertile, can be greatly improved. The agricultural produces charcoal out of fallow vegetation instead of converting it to carbon dioxide through burning. Slash and char improves soil quality by transferring organic carbon into recalcitrant soil organic matter pools. This newly described agricultural practice has important implications for the earth's carbon budget and sustainability in tropical agriculture.
