Conflict in the Horn of Africa

Conflict in the Horn of Africa PDF Author: Vincent Bakpetu Thompson
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 0761865268
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 421

Book Description
Conflict in the Horn of Africa examines how the Kenya-Somalia border problem has deep roots in pre-colonial and colonial times mirroring the phenomenon of shifting territorial and human frontiers and treaties which Britain, France, Italy, and Ethiopia made before and after World Wars I and II. This book documents the Kenya-Somalia border problem from the nineteenth century, when decisions ignored African concerns, to independence, when Africans acted as the principal players. Vincent Bakpetu Thompson analyses how the crises regarding Kenya and Somalia’s domestic situations impacted their international relations in and beyond the region. This book furthers the discussion by looking at the current problems in the region that are obscured by instability, infiltrations, the repetitive influx of refugees crossing and re-crossing the border, and increasing terrorist attacks.

Maritime Delimitation

Maritime Delimitation PDF Author: Rainer Lagoni
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004150331
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
The delimitation of maritime zones is an important requirement for peaceful relations between neighbouring States. There are numerous examples of areas between States with opposite or adjacent coasts where sovereignty over an island or territory may not be contested but the delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone is still pending. Under the Law of the Sea Convention, the delimitation of these zones shall be effected by agreement on the basis of international law. However, the Convention does not offer a definitive answer as to the methods that should be applied. This publication includes contributions by Judges of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, eminent scholars and experienced practitioners. The papers deal with various aspects of maritime delimitation: the jurisprudence of international courts and tribunals and their relevance for delimitation, the impact of the Law of the Sea Convention, the role of legal practitioners and diplomatic negotiators, and delimitation under particular geological circumstances and in geographically complex regional situations. It is designed to provide insight and guidance to the complicated process of maritime delimitation.

Kenya-Somalia Maritime Dispute an Avenue for Peace

Kenya-Somalia Maritime Dispute an Avenue for Peace PDF Author: Kyalo Munyao
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Economic zones (Law of the sea)
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
"The Kenya-Somalia maritime border dispute is increasingly threatening peaceful co-existence between the two nations. Kenya-Somalia trade is voluminous and critical to both counties. An economic fallout will be disastrous to both states and to regional members. Escalation to military action might lead to irreconcilable differences, and neither country can sustain a prolonged war. Any military incursion by Kenya into Somalia will be frowned upon by the International community and might invite unwarranted reactions. The two countries need to find areas of cooperation. They should be cautious of external interference that may fuel the dispute to exploit the natural resources across their borders. However, Kenya should wait and use an ICJ ruling as a starting point for negotiations and legitimize her actions so as not sacrifice its national interests."--Abstract.

We Do Not Have Borders

We Do Not Have Borders PDF Author: Keren Weitzberg
Publisher: Ohio University Press
ISBN: 0821445952
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 397

Book Description
Though often associated with foreigners and refugees, many Somalis have lived in Kenya for generations, in many cases since long before the founding of the country. Despite their long residency, foreign and state officials and Kenyan citizens often perceive the Somali population to be a dangerous and alien presence in the country, and charges of civil and human rights abuses have mounted against them in recent years. In We Do Not Have Borders, Keren Weitzberg examines the historical factors that led to this state of affairs. In the process, she challenges many of the most fundamental analytical categories, such as “tribe,” “race,” and “nation,” that have traditionally shaped African historiography. Her interest in the ways in which Somali representations of the past and the present inform one another places her research at the intersection of the disciplines of history, political science, and anthropology. Given tragic events in Kenya and the controversy surrounding al-Shabaab, We Do Not Have Borders has enormous historical and contemporary significance, and provides unique inroads into debates over globalization, African sovereignty, the resurgence of religion, and the multiple meanings of being African.
