The Rare Earth Elements

The Rare Earth Elements PDF Author: David A. Atwood
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 111863263X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 994

Book Description
Lanthanides are of great importance for the electronic industries, this new book (from the EIBC Book Series) provides a comprehensive coverage of the basic chemistry, particularly inorganic chemistry, of the lanthanoid elements, those having a 4f shell of electrons. A chapter is describing the similarity of the Group 3 elements, Sc, Y, La, the group from which the lanthanoids originate and the group 13 elements, particularly aluminum, having similar properties. Inclusion of the group 3 and 13 elements demonstrates how the lanthanoid elements relate to other, more common, elements in the Periodic Table. Beginning chapters describe the occurrence and mineralogy of the elements, with a focus on structural features observed in compounds described in later chapters. The majority of the chapters is organized by the oxidation state of the elements, Ln(0), Ln(II), Ln(III), and Ln(IV). Within this organization the chapters are further distinguished by type of compound, inorganic (oxides and hydroxides, aqueous speciation, halides, alkoxides, amides and thiolates, and chelates) and organometallic. Concluding chapters deal with diverse and critically important applications of the lanthanoids in electronic and magnetic materials, and medical imaging.

Cave Art and Climate Change

Cave Art and Climate Change PDF Author: Kieran D. O’Hara
Publisher: Archway Publishing
ISBN: 1480811319
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 137

Book Description
French and Spanish Upper Paleolithic cave art was drawn forty thousand to eleven thousand years ago, and it was motivated by climate change. Kieran D. OHara, a geologist and professor emeritus at the University of Kentucky, explains why we know that to be true in this groundbreaking book. His goal isnt to explore the meaning of cave art but to show why it was done. While many scholars argue that the art depicted in these caves dont depict the animals of that period, OHara argues just the opposite putting forth the controversial theory that the cave paintings accurately reflect the climate and animals that existed alongside the artists. For far too long, cave art specialists have incorrectly concluded that cave art doesnt match up with the reality of life at the time because theyve been comparing archaeological bone remains with cave imagery of a different age. Paleolithic people survived through the most severe swings in climate this planet has experienced in the past two million years, and it was a major factor in what cave artists depicted. Examine the facts, and discover a new interpretation with Cave Art and Climate Change.

Rediscovering Geography

Rediscovering Geography PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309051991
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
As political, economic, and environmental issues increasingly spread across the globe, the science of geography is being rediscovered by scientists, policymakers, and educators alike. Geography has been made a core subject in U.S. schools, and scientists from a variety of disciplines are using analytical tools originally developed by geographers. Rediscovering Geography presents a broad overview of geography's renewed importance in a changing world. Through discussions and highlighted case studies, this book illustrates geography's impact on international trade, environmental change, population growth, information infrastructure, the condition of cities, the spread of AIDS, and much more. The committee examines some of the more significant tools for data collection, storage, analysis, and display, with examples of major contributions made by geographers. Rediscovering Geography provides a blueprint for the future of the discipline, recommending how to strengthen its intellectual and institutional foundation and meet the demand for geographic expertise among professionals and the public.
