Book Description
The month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, brings with it the memory of the sacrifice of Imam Husain [a], the grandson of Prophet Muhammad [s],and his noble family and friends. This short text reflectsthe deep admiration of its author towards Imam Husain [a]and an insight into the tragedy of Karbala, its reasons andits consequences. It is presented with the hope that it willfoster the Islamic unity and the brotherly love that the author seeks in his preface. The author, of course, is none other than the well-known Sunni English translator and commentator of the Qur'an,Abdullah Yusuf Ali, who died in 1952 in England. Littlewould he have known that his English translation and commentary of the Qur'an would become so popular in the West and East alike, wherever English is read and understood. Perhaps Karbala is not quite over yet.

Recalling the Sacrifices of Karbala

Recalling the Sacrifices of Karbala PDF Author: Sheikh Mateen Charbonneau

Book Description
I have noticed over the years that the museeba of Ahl ul Bayt (as) or as we may say in English recalling the tragedies of the Household of the Prophet (as) have been recited beautifully in Arabic, Farsi and Urdu for example. Yet when it comes down to English a lot of speakers are at a loss for what to do to convey these feelings and emotions to the crowd attending the majalis (gathering). English is not a very melodious language with intonations such as Farsi for example. With this in mind, I felt the need to write the museeba in a way that the words move the person instead of the intonation of the sentence. I've noticed over the years that when researching to prepare museeba that some of the things people mention from the mimbar have no basis in our text. I wanted to make sure the things I narrate have a textual basis. Due to this reason I have stuck to using sourced material which if one goes and looks in the following books they will find the basis of these museeba there: Maqtal of Abu Zahra al-Ka'bi, Maqtal of Abdul Razzaq al-Maqarram, Nafasul Mahmoom by Sheikh abbas Qummi, Life of Imam Hussain by Sheikh Baqir Qarashi, Kamil Al-Ziyarat by Sheikh Abbas Qummi to name a few.Another thing to keep in mind about reciting the museeba of Ahl ul Bayt (as) is that it should be done with recognition (ma'rifa) of the Imam (as). So, in the beginning of this book I have included some chapters about the status of Imam Hussain (as), Imamate and Majalis. There are many masa'ib (tragedies) of the different companions and family members that are not mentioned in this book due to the sake of brevity. I highly encourage all to go and learn about each person who has died defending the Holy Household of Muhammad (as). I pray that Allah accepts this work which includes a group of those who sacrificed their life for Imam Hussain (as) and that He forgives me for those whom I have neglected mentioning in this book.I hope this book is useful for those who are public speakers giving majalis whether in our blessed Hussainiya's or in the majalis that are held in their homes. I humbly ask you to keep me, my family and all the believers in your prayers, but first and foremost pray for the reappearance of our awaited savior the 12th Imam Mahdi (aj).

God's Sacrifice

God's Sacrifice PDF Author: Sayed Hadi Al-Modarresi
Publisher: Enlight Press
ISBN: 9780994240927

Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
1335 years ago, on the tenth day of the new year, in the early hours of the afternoon, on a sand-dune at Karbala, south of the current Iraqi capital, a small convoy of men, women, and children was savagely massacred by an army of over 30,000. It took the monstrous military force little more than four hours to completely and utterly annihilate the encampment. The small group led by Imam Hussein, grandson of their prophet, though mythically defiant, suffered a crushing defeat. The remaining women and children were taken into custody. The caravan then accompanied the severed heads of the martyrs and was paraded throughout the nation in a humiliating spectacle amidst demented festivities and celebrations and then, everything was over.. Everything. Yet in the midst of the chaos and senseless brutality, Hussein became a singular figure who fills history with his grace and grandeur, becoming a meta-historical legend, epitomizing the perennial struggle between good and evil. This is his true, albeit unbelievable story.

Teaching Humanity

Teaching Humanity PDF Author: Vernon James Schubel
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031223624
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
This book introduces Islam through a "humanistic" lens, by highlighting the affective traditions and expressions associated with Sufism and Shi'ism. While most introductory books emphasize the shari’a, and especially the “Five Pillars,” as the primary defining characteristic of Islam, Vernon James Schubel provides an alternative introduction which instead underscores the importance of humanity and the human being within Islamic thought and practice. The book stresses the diversity of Islamic beliefs and practices, presenting them as varied responses to the shared multivalent concepts of tawhid (the unity of God), nubuwwa (prophecy) and qiyama (the Day of Judgment). Readers are introduced to essential aspects of Islam including the life of the Prophet Muhammad, the Qur’an, the development of the shari‘a, and the emergence of the Sunni, Shi‘a and Sufi traditions. The book concludes with a call to redefine “mainstream” Islam, as a religious tradition focused on the centrality of love and rooted in the importance of humanity and universal human virtues.

Political theologies and development in Asia

Political theologies and development in Asia PDF Author: Giuseppe Bolotta
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526149397
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
This innovative and timely reassessment of political theology opens new lines of critical investigation into the intersections of religion and politics in contemporary Asia. Moving beyond a focus on the (post-) Christian West, this volume locates ‘development’ – conceptualised as a set of modern, transnational networks of ideas and practices of improvement that connect geographically disparate locations – as a vital focal point for critical investigations into Asian political theologies. Investigating the sacred dimensions of power through concepts of transcendence, sacrifice, victimhood, aspiration, and salvation, this collection demonstrates how European and Asian modernities are bound together through genealogical, institutional, and theo-political entanglements, as well as a long history of global interactions. With contributions by leading anthropologists, sociologists, and political scientists, this volume brings new theoretical approaches into conversation with detailed empirical case studies grounded in modern Asia. In doing so, it offers a fresh and critical analysis of the ways in which political theology is imagined, materialised, and contested both within and beyond nation-states.

Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1491757566
Category : Religion

Pages : 226

Book Description
Muslims need a passion for unity. All Muslims believe and follow the Quran and Prophet Mohammad and highly respect and admire Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib. Yet despite similar traditions, there is a lack of unity because of an inaccurate understanding of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talibs vision and mission among many Muslims. In Know and Follow the Straight Path: Finding Common Ground between Sunnis and Shias, author Tallal Alie Turfe, a champion of religious tolerance, explores the Quran and traditions to find the common ground and common principles between the Islamic schools of thought. He is a strong advocate of intrafaith dialogue that offers the chance for better understanding, collaboration, and partnership among all Muslims. This book is a road map for Muslims to trek the path of truth and certainty in the hope their efforts will lead to a genuine unity as they celebrate their differences as windows of opportunities. As they uproot ignorance with knowledge, they will learn to cooperate with each other. The pledge to unity must begin within themselves, within their families, within their communities, and with each other. Know and Follow the Straight Path: Finding Common Ground between Sunnis and Shias provides the whys and hows necessary to winning that unity.
