Performing the Ramayana Tradition

Performing the Ramayana Tradition PDF Author: Paula Richman
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0197552536
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 393

Book Description
The Ramayana, one of the two pre-eminent Hindu epics, has played a foundational role in many aspects of India's arts and social norms. For centuries, people learned this narrative by watching, listening, and participating in enactments of it. Although the Ramayana's first extant telling in Sanskrit dates back to ancient times, the story has continued to be retold and rethought through the centuries in many of India's regional languages, such as Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali. The narrative has provided the basis for enactments of its episodes in recitation, musical renditions, dance, and avant-garde performances. This volume introduces non-specialists to the Ramayana's major themes and complexities, as well as to the highly nuanced terms in Indian languages used to represent theater and performance. Two introductions orient readers to the history of Ramayana texts by Tulsidas, Valmiki, Kamban, Sankaradeva, and others, as well as to the dramaturgy and aesthetics of their enactments. The contributed essays provide context-specific analyses of diverse Ramayana performance traditions and the narratives from which they draw. The essays are clustered around the shared themes of the politics of caste and gender; the representation of the anti-hero; contemporary re-interpretations of traditional narratives; and the presence of Ramayana discourse in daily life.

Film Music: A History

Film Music: A History PDF Author: James Wierzbicki
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135851425
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 688

Book Description
Film Music: A History explains the development of film music by considering large-scale aesthetic trends and structural developments alongside socioeconomic, technological, cultural, and philosophical circumstances. The book’s four large parts are given over to Music and the "Silent" Film (1894--1927), Music and the Early Sound Film (1895--1933), Music in the "Classical-Style" Hollywood Film (1933--1960), and Film Music in the Post-Classic Period (1958--2008). Whereas most treatments of the subject are simply chronicles of "great film scores" and their composers, this book offers a genuine history of film music in terms of societal changes and technological and economic developments within the film industry. Instead of celebrating film-music masterpieces, it deals—logically and thoroughly—with the complex ‘machine’ whose smooth running allowed those occasional masterpieces to happen and whose periodic adjustments prompted the large-scale twists and turns in film music’s path.

King, Court, and Capital

King, Court, and Capital PDF Author: Anna Libera Dallapiccola
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
While the art and architecture of Vijayanagara is justly celebrated, the literature of the period is relatively unknown outside southern India, due to the lack of adequate translations from Kannada, Telugu and Tamil. This work brings together for the first time in English a selection from literary sources in medieval Kannada language. The texts date from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries and were written both at the Vijayanagara capital and various provincial outposts of the empire by the most accomplished authors and poets of the day. The texts selected for this volume conform to the literary conventions and imagery of their era and should not be considered historical chronicles like those of the foreign visitors to the capital. Even so, these translated extracts from medieval Kannada shed valuable light on the ways in which contemporary authors thought about life at the Vijayanagara capital. Among the topics that are described here are the layout of the city, its palace and markets and streets, the everyday routines of the king, his courtiers and family members, and a number of religious ceremonies, weddings, feasts and festivals. To facilitate the reader, the translated extracts have been arranged according to topic, rather than by date or author. An appendix gives background information on the texts and their authors, as well as an index to all the extracts from a particular literary source. An extensive Kannada-English glossary is also provided.

Handbook of Twentieth-Century Literatures of India

Handbook of Twentieth-Century Literatures of India PDF Author: Nalini Natarajan
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 031303267X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 451

Book Description
India has a rich literary assemblage produced by its many different regional traditions, religious faiths, ethnic subcultures and linguistic groups. The published literature of the 20th century is a particularly interesting subject and is the focus of this book, as it represents the provocative conjuncture of the transitions of Indian modernity. This reference book surveys the major regional literatures of contemporary India in the context of the country's diversity and heterogeneity. Chapters are devoted to particular regions, and the arrangement of the work invites comparisons of literary traditions. Chapters provide extensive bibliographies of primary works, thus documenting the creative achievement of numerous contemporary Indian authors. Some chapters cite secondary works as well, and the volume concludes with a list of general works providing further information. An introductory essay overviews theoretical concerns, ideological and aesthetic considerations, developments in various genres, and the history of publishing in regional literatures. The introduction provides a context for approaching the chapters that follow, each of which is devoted to the literature of a particular region. Each chapter begins with a concise introductory section. The body of each chapter is structured according to social and historical events, literary forms, or broad descriptive or analytic trends, depending on the particular subject matter. Each chapter then closes with an extensive bibliography of primary works, thus documenting the rich literary tradition of the region. Some chapters also cite secondary sources as an aid to the reader. The final chapters of the book address special topics, such as sub-cultural literatures, or the interplay between literature and film. A list of additional sources of general information concludes the volume.
