Im Allgemeinen wird sich in der Öffentlichkeit und zum großen Teil auch in der historischen Forschung mit den Verbrechen der Nationalsozialisten und mit den schlimmen Schicksalen der jüdischen Bevölkerung zur Zeit des zweiten Weltkrieges beschäftigt. Doch was geschah mit den Juden nach dem Ende des Krieges? In den Schulen wird sich direkt im Anschluss dieses Themas mit den Gründungen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik befasst, ebenso wie mit dem kalten Krieg. Doch den deutschen Juden, beziehungsweise den Juden in Deutschland nach der Shoa wird kaum Beachtung geschenkt. Im Laufe dieser Hausarbeit wird klar, welchen Weg, die sich zum Kriegsende in Deutschland befindlichen Juden, für ihre Zukunft gewählt haben und wie einige Konzentrationslager zu dieser Zeit genutzt wurden. Des Weiteren ist es das Ziel der Arbeit, die einzelnen Gruppen der jüdischen Überlebenden aufzuzeigen. Darüber hinaus soll vor allem ein Hauptaugenmerk auf die Entstehung der Gemeinden gelegt werden. Ebenso mögen die dazugehörigen Hindernisse und Schwierigkeiten herausgearbeitet werden. Eine der wichtigsten Fragen, die es zu klären gilt, ist, ob sich überhaupt nach dem Ende des Holocaust ein jüdisches Leben in Deutschland entwickeln konnte und inwiefern es mit dem jüdisch-religiösen Leben vor der Shoa noch übereinstimmt. Auch müssen die Unterschiede zum einen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und zum anderen in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik auf Hinblick des Aufbaus, der Struktur und der gesamten Entwicklung des jüdischen Lebens Beachtung geschenkt werden.

Home after Fascism draws on a rich array of memoirs, interviews, correspondence, and archival research to tell the stories of Italian and German Jews who returned to their home countries after the Holocaust. The book reveals Jews' complex and often changing feelings toward their former homes and highlights the ways in which three distinct national contexts--East German, West German, and Italian--shaped their answers to the question, is this home? Returning Italian and German Jews renegotiated their place in national communities that had targeted them for persecution and extermination. While most Italian Jews remained deeply attached to their home country, German Jews struggled to feel at home in the "country of murderers." Yet, some retained a sense of belonging through German culture and language or felt attached to a specific region or city. Still others looked to the future; socialist and communists of Jewish origin hoped to build a better Germany in the Soviet Occupied Zone. In all three postwar states, surviving Jews fought against persistent antisemitism, faced the challenge of recovering lost homes and possessions, struggled to make sense of their persecution, and tried to find ways to reclaim a sense of belonging. How much do we really understand this new Germany, and how do its people understand themselves? Speaking the Unspeakable in Postwar Germany is an interdisciplinary study of a diverse set of public speeches given by major literary and cultural figures in the 1950s and 1960s. Through close readings of canonical speeches by Hannah Arendt, Theodor W. Adorno, Ingeborg Bachmann, Martin Buber, Paul Celan, Uwe Johnson, Peter Szondi, and Peter Weiss, Sonja Boos demonstrates that these speakers both facilitated and subverted the construction of a public discourse about the Holocaust in postwar West Germany.
