Excerpt from Journal of the Chemical Society, 1911, Vol. 99: Transactions; Part II More recently, however, Browning and Flint (amer. J. Sci, 1909, [iv], 28, 347) asserted that if tellurium tetrachloride, dissolved in hydrochloric acid, is precipitated by a large excess of hot water, some separation of the element is effected. The work was continued by Flint (amer. J. Sci, 1910, [iv], 30, A large quantity of tellurium was purified by precipitation with sulphur dioxide, fusion of the precipitate with potassium cyanide, decomposition of the potassium telluride by air, and distillation of the product in a current of hydrogen. About 1000 grams of this material were converted into the dioxide, and dissolved in the minimum quantity of hydrochloric acid. This was poured into a large excess of boiling water, and allowed to remain. The dioxide which separated was again dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and precipitated by hot water. When this process had been repeated four times, atomic-weight determinations were made with the material, and gave a mean result of and after ten repetitions of the same process the atomic weight obtained was only No atomic weight determinations are given in the paper of the less hydrolysable material. I. Pietro falciola (cazzetta, 1910, 40, ii, 217 - The author has studied the composition and the solubilities (in some cases quantitatively) of the ammonium salts of the fatty acids mentioned, and has found that the Oleate is soluble in cold alcohol, whilst the palmitate and stearate are not. The quantitative separation is efiected by dissolving the mixture of acids in warm ether, passing ammonia through the solution, and allowing it to cool to the ordinary temperature. When almost all the ether has evaporated, the pasty residue is extracted with cold ammoniacal alcohol (at about filtered at the pump, and washed with a further portion of this solvent. From precipitate and filtrate the separated free fatty acids can be liberated by treatment with dilute hydrochloric acid. The methods gives results sufficiently accurate for technical analysis.
