Call for Manuscripts The Journal of African American Composition and Rhetoric is a multidisciplinary journal with an emphasis on writing across the curriculum, African American Composition and Rhetoric, scholarship that investigates, interrogates, and promotes paradigm shifts towards change for students of African descent in academia. In addition, research in writing across the curriculum, rhetoric, pedagogy, effective teaching methods of instruction, and theoretical and practical approaches to identifying with students of African descent are also vital in the journal. Finally, scholarship in African American Rhetoric and rhetorical analyses in disciplines across the curriculum are also explored. Manuscripts are accepted throughout the year but must be received before the December/January and August/May publication release date. Since The Journal of African American Composition and Rhetoric promotes critical reading, thinking, and writing across the curriculum- manuscripts can be in any standard document style (MLA, APA, Chicago style, Turabian style, etc.,), should not exceed 20 pages in length-not including tables, graphs, figures, and references-and typed double spaced in 12 point font Times New Roman. Scholar Adam J. Banks offers a mixtape of African American digital rhetoric in his innovative study Digital Griots: African American Rhetoric in a Multimedia Age. Presenting the DJ as a quintessential example of the digital griot-high-tech storyteller-this book shows how African American storytelling traditions and their digital manifestations can help scholars and teachers shape composition studies, thoroughly linking oral, print, and digital production in ways that centralize African American discursive practices as part of a multicultural set of ideas and pedagogical commitments. DJs are models of rhetorical excellence; canon makers; time binders who link past, present, and future in the groove and mix; and intellectuals continuously interpreting the history and current realities of their communities in real time. Banks uses the DJ's practices of the mix, remix, and mixtape as tropes for reimagining writing instruction and the study of rhetoric. As the rich words from the African proverbs resonate into the twenty-first century regarding the importance of identity and telling the stories of people of African descent through the eyes of the people, the grand rhetorician and griot of the twentieth century Dr William Edward Burghardt Du Bois’s infamous problem remains so today – “the problem of the colour-line.” After the election of Barack Hussein Obama, the first African American president of the United States; after the Civil Rights Movement; after Brown versus the Board of Education; after the students’ right to their own language; after Plessy versus Ferguson; and the murders of innocent, young African American males, including Emmett Till, Timothy Thomas, Trayvon Martin, John Crawford III, Tamir Rice, Jordan Davis, Eric Garner, and Mike Brown, people of African descent are still battling with being labelled a “problem in one’s own country” while the USA continues to strive for a post-racial era.
