But a rat stole it, whereupon the owl Was very angry, and went off to the rat's house, and threatened to kill him. But the rat apologised, saying I will give you this gimlet and tell you how you can obtain from it pleasure far greater than the pleasure of eating the food which I was so rude as to eat up. Look herel you must stick the gimlet with the sharp point upwards in the ground at the foot of this tree then go to the top of the tree yourself, and slide down the trunk. Then the rat went away, and the owl did as the rat had instructed him. But, sliding down on to the sharp gimlet, he impaled himself on it, and suffered great pain, and, in his grief and rage, went off to kill the rat. Excerpt from The Medical Age, 1888, Vol. 6: A Semi-Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery Dr. A. B. Strong was very glad to find that his article had excited so much interest. It is certainly a practical subject, and one we are likely to meet with any day, and I am yet in favor of resection. -it is my impression that the first resection was made about fifteen years ago. A point against resection was raised by dr. Ingals - that of the too rapid evacuation of the matter. That point was ably answered by dr. Skeer, who said that when we have free evacuation we have a corresponding influx of air which takes the place of pus. I believe that to be so. In the two cases reported there was considerable cough at the time the chest was opened, but that quickly subsided. I had no fear that there would be rupture of the lung; I could feel the pleura three-fourths of an inch thick. Until some better reasons are given for not operating, I shall certainly be in favor of making a free opening by resection. I want to make an opening large enough so that I can get into the cavity and evacuate it freely; I cannot get out enough pus through an eighth of an inch Opening to satisfy me. In the case of the older boy, shreds of lymph as large as the little finger were thrown out for several days. I have no fear in opening the chest freely and draining it freely. Is this order ut forward as correspond wit the physical course of events an further, does it tally with e order stamped in the re cord of the rocks 3 Replying to the second question first, it must be ad mitted that, MM facile, the Bible sequence does not appear to be in unison with the geological. Of attempted reconciliations there is an almost endless variet but, unfortunately, among the harmonies themselves there is no rmony. At the present moment there is none that has gained neral acce tance: a few possess each the alle giance of a handful o partisans; t e ter number command the confidence only of their respective aut ors, and some not even that. It is needless to discuss these reconciliations, because if geology is trustworthy in its main results, and if our interpretation of the mean ing of Genesis is at all correct, correspondence in order and detail is impossible. If the order of Genesis was meant as science, then geo lo and Genesis are at issue; but, on the other hand, if the ncnoc in nesis was never meant to be physical, the wrong lies wit our selves, who have searched for geology where we should have looked for religion, and have, with the best intentions, persisted in tr 'ng to turn the Bible bread of life into the arid stone of science. Ow, we venture to suggest that in drafting this chapter the rulin formative thought was not chronology. It must be remembered t t the nar rative was under no obligation to follow the order of actual occurrence, unless that best suited its purpose. Zoology does not group the ani mals in the order of their emergence into existence, but classifies and discusses them in a very different sequence, adopted to exhibit their structural and functional affinities. If the design of Genesis was not to inform us about historical geology, but reveal and enforce re ligious truth, it might well be that a hterary or a logical, and not a chronological, arrangement might best serve its end. As a matter of fact, the order chosen is not primarily historical. Another uite different and very beautiful idea has fashioned, and is enshrin in.
