Joseph Funk was born 6 April 1778, probably in Hilltown, Bucks, Pennsylvania. His parents were Henry Funk and Barbara. He married Elizabeth Rhodes in about 1804 and they had five children. Elizabeth died in 1814. He married Rachel Britton in 1814 and they had nine children. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York.

Servanthood of Song is a history of American church music from the colonial era to the present.
