Book Description
Born the second son of a woman farmer, south of Salem, North Carolina, young Jonathan Henry Hamilton strikes out on his own in 1835, and becomes an overseer on a large slave Plantation. His actions and rapport with others, especially his gang of Bounders, as the slaves were called on the Bethania Plantation, made him very popular, particularly with the daughter of the plantations owner. With His bride, and four bounders, who he frees, Jonathan strikes out for the territory, and soon to be state of Arkansas, and an arsenal of adventure, including the helping of a group of Eastern Cherokee from Georgia, who had escaped the Trail of Tears and taken refuge in the Great Smoky Mountains after the discovery of the gold on their homelands had caused them to be chased out of Georgia by the greed of the whites and US President Andrew Jackson. Jons reward for this help was enough gold to purchase all the lands, manpower, materials and even little town on the Saint Francis river in Northeast Arkansas to build a rice empire. The struggles of Empire building finally start paying off and Jonathans family and Moses landing ark begins to prosper. But, there is trouble on the horizon! The issue of slavery causes problems in all the western states and Arkansas orders all free Negroes to leave, including the now 100 plus working the crops at Moses landing. Soon the civil war breaks out, and Jonathans oldest gains the union army in Saint Louis. While his second son and son-in-law join the confederatecy. At least one encounter in Missouri, pitting his sons against each other along with the absence of news of their whereabouts, only add to the stress Jon faces, trying to get his crops to market down the Mississippi to New Orleans, through a gauntlet of gunboats and emplacements. If all climates hen union gunboats and troops ascend the Saint Francis river to do battle with the Empire of Jonathan Henry Hamilton.

Jonathan's Journey
Author: Linda Clore
Publisher: Aspect Books
ISBN: 1479610127
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 129
Book Description
This book is a journey of Jonathan's life and how God's unseen hand has guided and protected Jonathan and has seen him through his folly years and spared his life time and time again. How his dad, David, and I have been praying for our son and claiming Proverbs 22:6 for him. God has a work for Jonathan to do in winning souls. God has a work for each one of us. Jonathan, at three years old, said, “I want to be a preacher!” At eight years old, he preached his first sermon to me, Linda, his mother, and to his grandma, Gladys, about not following Satan and end up in hell but follow Jesus and get to go to heaven. In this book, Jonathan's Journey follows the ways God has rescued Jonathan and brought him through miraculous situations, so his life has been spared for the work God has for him to do. May this life story of Jonathan's fighting the devil through depression, suicidal thoughts and attempts on his own life, drugging, smoking, drinking, car accidents, complete paralysis of his whole body, ending up in a wheelchair, and feeling lost and forsaken of the Lord—may these experiences Jonathan has gone through help you to see how God is sparing your life and helping you through your rough times, too. And may the parents of rebellious children be encouraged to keep praying for their wayward children and never give up on them! God's unseen hand is on them! Have faith in God! We continue to pray and claim Romans 8:28; Matthew 21:22; Mark 10:27; Luke 1:37; and Proverbs 22:6.

The Living and the Undead
Author: Gregory A. Waller
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 0252090330
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 410
Book Description
With a legacy stretching back into legend and folklore, the vampire in all its guises haunts the film and fiction of the twentieth century and remains the most enduring of all the monstrous threats that roam the landscapes of horror. In The Living and the Undead, Gregory A. Waller shows why this creature continues to fascinate us and why every generation reshapes the story of the violent confrontation between the living and the undead to fit new times. Examining a broad range of novels, stories, plays, films, and made-for-television movies, Waller focuses upon a series of interrelated texts: Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897); several film adaptations of Stoker's novel; F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror (1922); Richard Matheson's I Am Legend (1954); Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot (1975); Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979); and George Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1979). All of these works, Waller argues, speak to our understanding and fear of evil and chaos, of desire and egotism, of slavish dependence and masterful control. This paperback edition of The Living and the Undead features a new preface in which Waller positions his analysis in relation to the explosion of vampire and zombie films, fiction, and criticism in the past twenty-five years.

Draculas, Vampires, and Other Undead Forms
Author: John Edgar Browning
Publisher: Scarecrow Press
ISBN: 0810869233
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 339
Book Description
Since the publication of Dracula in 1897, Bram Stoker's original creation has been a source of inspiration for artists, writers, and filmmakers. From Universal's early black-and-white films and Hammer's Technicolor representations that followed, iterations of Dracula have been cemented in mainstream cinema. This anthology investigates and explores the far larger body of work coming from sources beyond mainstream cinema reinventing Dracula. Draculas, Vampires and Other Undead Forms assembles provocative essays that examine Dracula films and their movement across borders of nationality, sexuality, ethnicity, gender, and genre since the 1920s. The essays analyze the complexity Dracula embodies outside the conventional landscape of films with which the vampire is typically associated. Focusing on Dracula and Dracula-type characters in film, anime, and literature from predominantly non-Anglo markets, this anthology offers unique perspectives that seek to ground depictions and experiences of Dracula within a larger political, historical, and cultural framework.
