Book Description
The author is a retired cartographer and graphic artist for the Government of British Columbia. He left Canada in his Jeep, Silver Bullet to live for a time in the tropics of Mexico. The Mexican people, black volcanoes, jungle landscape, torrid climate and a twenty five year old woman who robbed banks in North Africa, inspired him to write. The author fictionalized the stories of his experiences into those of his character Jonathan Owen. Jonathan's adventure begins on the road from his home in Canada and ends on a beach five months later in the exotic village of Bucerias on the Bahia de Banderas, Mexico. Jonathan Owen, Silver Bullet and Bank Robber live through many adventures in the land of bloody bullfights, illegal cockfights, pagan ways and religious festivals. Jonathan tells his young friend many stories of his life and imaginary ones of the people - past and future of Mexico. Together they learn about the brutality of the Aztec and Mayan peoples. Jonathan comes to appreciate the ancient God Quetzalcoatl and the Christian apparition, the Virgin of Guadalupe. They travel together on board Silver Bullet up into the Sierra Madras and jungles where love haunts them. They experience legends, myths and ghosts and the joy of giving to the poor in one of the many desolate places in Mexico - the municipal garbage dump of Puerto Vallarta. In Mexico life is abundant and cheap with death close by as Jonathan and Bank Robber find out. Driving the back roads through farms and jungles they see and smell it every day not knowing how close they are to their own demise. They will eventually and inevitably face death head on and it will change them forever.

The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta

The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta PDF Author: John Rollin Ridge
Publisher: Graphic Arts Books
ISBN: 1513288431
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 111

Book Description
The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta (1854) is a novel by John Rollin Ridge. Published under his birth name Yellow Bird, from Cheesquatalawny in Cherokee, The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta was the first novel from a Native American author. Despite its popular success worldwide—the novel was translated into French and Spanish—Ridge’s work was a financial failure due to bootleg copies and widespread plagiarism. Recognized today as a groundbreaking work of nineteenth century fiction, The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta is a powerful novel that investigates American racism, illustrates the struggle for financial independence among marginalized communities, and dramatizes the lives of outlaws seeking fame, fortune, and vigilante justice. Born in Mexico, Joaquin Murieta came to California in search of gold. Despite his belief in the American Dream, he soon faces violence and racism from white settlers who see his success as a miner as a personal affront. When his wife is raped by a mob of white men and after Joaquin is beaten by a group of horse thieves, he loses all hope of living alongside Americans and turns to a life of vigilantism. Joined by a posse of similarly enraged Mexican-American men, Joaquin becomes a fearsome bandit with a reputation for brutality and stealth. Based on the life of Joaquin Murrieta Carrillo, also known as The Robin Hood of the West, The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta would serve as inspiration for Johnston McCulley’s beloved pulp novel hero Zorro. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of John Rollin Ridge’s The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta is a classic work of Native American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1493081659
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 830

Book Description
Featuring rumpled PIs, shyster lawyers, corrupt politicians, double-crossers, femmes fatales, and, of course, losers who find themselves down on their luck yet again, film noir is a perennially popular cinematic genre. This extensive encyclopedia describes movies from noir's earliest days – and even before, looking at some of noir's ancestors in US and European cinema – as well as noir's more recent offshoots, from neonoirs to erotic thrillers. Entries are arranged alphabetically, covering movies from all over the world – from every continent save Antarctica – with briefer details provided for several hundred additional movies within those entries. A copious appendix contains filmographies of prominent directors, actors, and writers. With coverage of blockbusters and program fillers from Going Straight (US 1916) to Broken City (US 2013) via Nora Inu (Japan 1949), O Anthropos tou Trainou (Greece 1958), El Less Wal Kilab (Egypt 1962), Reportaje a la Muerte (Peru 1993), Zift (Bulgaria 2008), and thousands more, A Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Film Noir is an engrossing and essential reference work that should be on the shelves of every cinephile.
