Book Description
Excerpt from Joliet and Marquette in Iowa The first recorded interview between the white man and the Indian, within the limits of the present State of Iowa, was incident to the landing of Joliet and Marquette upon the west bank of the Mississippi on the 25th of June, 1673. The exact locality in which this interview was held has always been a matter of doubt. That the subject is one of some interest is shown by the fact that a number of points have been named as probable sites of the landing of the two explorers upon the occasion in question. Among these may be mentioned Montrose, Sandusky, and the mouth of Lemoiliese Greek or Bloody Run - all in Lee County. Writers have generally agreed upon placing the landing near the mouth of the Des Moines river, but both Shea and Parkman favor some stream further north. It was certainly near to some western tributary of considerable size. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of Jefferson County Iowa, Vol. 1: A Record of Settlement, Organization, Progress and Achievement Leaving their men to rest during their absence, Joliet and Marquette fol lowed the path to find, if they could, the people whose travel back and forth had left this evidence of their presence. They had walked for five miles or more through forests and across prairies when there came in view an Indian village on the bank of the river. Perhaps a mile away were two other villages. They shouted to attract attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Father Marquette: Jesuit Missionary and Explorer, the Discover of the Mississippi, His Place of Burial at St. Ignace Michigan In the annals of American chivalry no deeds of prowess and self-sacrifice are more heroic than those of the gentle Marquette. Fitted by nature for great enterprises, he was unselfish enough to be content with obscure and with somewhat commonplace tasks, performing even these with such fidelity and devotion as to merit distinction. Many missionaries labored for the Ottawas, but he alone deserved the title of "their Angel." Never neglecting the work in hand, his zeal made him constantly dream of opening up new fields for the evangelical harvest, and but few dreamers have had either his opportunity or courage to make their dream, a reality.
