Book Description
Excerpt from Johnes on the Causes Which Have Produced Dissent: From the Established Church, in the Principality of Wales It is now about forty years ago since I reluctantly consented - at the urgent request of an excellent friend now no more - a clergyman of the Church of England, the Reverend Thomas Richards, of Llangyniew, in this county - to embark on the task of preparing "An Essay on the Causes of Dissent in Wales," as a candidate for a prize, that had been offered for the best Essay on that subject, by the Royal Cambrian Institution of London. That prize was awarded to me in May, 1831, by the Judge, the highest authority on Welsh Literature - Dr. W. O. Pughe - who pronounced it to contain a true account of the Causes of Dissent in Wales; and recommended its publication at the expense of the Society. The First Edition appeared soon afterwards. In the following year, 1832, a Second Edition was published, with copious Historical and Statistical details, which, notwithstaiidiug various attempts made through the Press to impugn their correctness, were eventually accepted by unprejudiced men, whether Churchmen or Dissenters, as truthful and accurate. Had I leisure for the task, I do not think I could advantageously re-examine or alter those details. Nor do I think it advisable to remodel or change passages expressive of impressions entertained by me in my twenty third year, tin questions such as the voluntary system and its effects - the question how far, and under what circumstances is separation from an Established Church justifiable - and other similar topics, on which wide differences prevail among men of honest and enlightened minds. During the long period of my life that has elapsed since the first publication of this volume, some Bishops who have presided over Welsh Sees, have laboured industriously to redress the abuses of patronage, for which their predecessors were responsible. Time has also enhanced my opinion of the benefits, that Dissenting bodies have conferred on Wales, - benefits fully described in this volume. Not illustrated. 1870 edition. Excerpt: ...us as often as they are ordered so to do. "The lands which were bestowed by the devout bounty of our forefathers of old, upon the cathedrals of Wales, (as they do not love our country, ) they sell, give away, and alienate to the clergy and others who may happen to covet them. And because the lands See Mr. Theophilus Jones's valuable History of Brecknockshire. belonging to the churches are liable to be taken from them, we ourselves have taken part of them into our own hands, and they are in our possession at the present time. From these causes, the Cathedral Churches of Wales have been reduced to the greatest poverty; but if they were blessed with good and godly Bishops, they would soon again be rich and flourishing. "Besides these things, when the Saxons (English) rush into Wales, the Archbishop of Canterbury puts the whole land under an interdict; and because we and our people defend our country against the Saxons and other enemies, he places us and our people under judgment of excommunication, and causes those Bishops whom he sent amongst us, to proclaim this judgment, which they are ready to do on all occasions. The consequence is, that every one of our people who falls on the field of blood, in defence of the liberty of his country, dies under the curse of excommunication. We, therefore, with sighs and tears, beseech your Holiness, to whom belongs the government of the Universal Church, to give us effectual relief from these grievances, and others which will be communicated to you by the mouth of the Canons of St. David's, and Giraldus, their Bishop elect, who is a discreet and reverend man. And with one voice, we implore you to liberate your children from the oppression they have endured from the three last Bishops that have...
