Book Description
This informative genealogy presents ten generations of the descendants of the Huguenot John Mallet (1673-1745). John was one of some 300,000 Huguenots (a Calvinist religious sect) who fled France in the 17th century to escape religious persecution. After a brief stay in South Carolina, during which he lost his first wife and all of their children, John relocated to New England and is noted as a resident of Fairfield, Connecticut as early as 1710. He married his servant, Johannah Lyon, in 1699 and fathered five children with her between 1701 and 1712. The text is divided into three sections: a survey of the existing historical record of the Mallets in North America, the "Genealogical Record" and an index. The first section provides historical background on the Huguenots, the family's origins in France and England, the establishment of the family in Connecticut, lists of Mallets involved in the Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and numerous documents pertaining to the family. Amongst those documents reprinted are wills, estate inventories, correspondence and a land survey. The "Genealogical Record" is arranged in a columnar format, enumerating ten generations of Mallet descendants (numbered individually and by generation, including numerous spelling variations for the surname). The following information is provided wherever known: name, date of birth, date of marriage, names of spouses and children, date of death and place of burial. The index notes every full name recorded in both the historical and genealogical sections.
