His most recent study is of Johann Kilian the religious leader of the Texas Wends who generally has been identified as the symbol of that community. As a university graduate, Kilian was by far the most educated member of the group and many of his letters and documents have been preserved. He accepted the call of the Wendish leaders to become the pastor of the congregation which would provide the cohesion for the community in Texas. This study is the examination of his life which led up to the call and then to his life in Texas. In spite of his prominence, his will did not always prevail, and he was subject to the democratically arrived-at decisions of the congregational assembly. Nevertheless, his biography serves not only as the study of an important person, but it also parallels the history of the Wendish community in Texas.

As most researchers know, the Bremen lists were destroyed during the fire storm of that city during World War II. In the case of this work, however, Mr. Smith was able to recover fourteen Bremen lists because they had been reprinted in the obscure weekly newspaper from Rudolstadt, Thuringia, entitled the "Allgemeine Auswanderungs-Zeitung" (which can be found in the rare-book collection at Yale University). The compiler has transcribed the names of all persons bound for America from each of the fourteen lists. The emigrants, who are arranged alphabetically, are identified by place of origin and sometimes by the number of persons in the passenger's family or the names of traveling companions.

One hundred years ago, in 1911, two young men lost their lives: one from a stab wound and the other by mob action. In an attempt to explain how such violence could take place in a prosperous and forward-looking community, the author first examines the growth of Thorndale as a small agricultural town on the railroad and then connects Thorndales geographical setting in central Texas with its tradition of violence. This particular lynching was unusual in that it took place at night, thereby complicating apprehension of the members of the mob. However, as a result of intervention by the governor, four men were arrested for the crime and three were tried. The lynching was also unusual because the victim was of Mexican heritage thereby inciting the Mexican community to voice its outrage and demand justice. The nature of its reaction testifies to the political awareness of the Mexican minority and also provides an insight into its perception of Anglo society.
