Male and Female School Psychologists' Perceptions of Their Educational and Career Experiences
Author: Lela Kosteck Bunch
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : School psychologists
Languages : en
Pages : 314
Book Description
One would assume that because of the initiatives designed to resolve the dilemma of gender differences in the world of work, the problem has diminished. However, in a recent study of school psychologists by Reschly and Wilson (1995), the authors noted that while more women were receiving doctorate degrees, women made up the majority (65%) of the practitioner job role, and men made up the majority (70%) of the academician job role. This information deserves merit as a gender issue when one considers their subsequent findings: academicians reported larger salaries and higher job satisfaction scores than practitioners. It might be concluded that the effects of job role and perhaps degree level accounted for the differences in salary and job satisfaction. However, it is plausible that the differences may have also been highly influenced by the variable of gender and the impact of socialization and opportunity on the career options available to each gender. In an effort to explore these issues further, a representative sample of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) was surveyed. Multivariate analyses of variance and covariance were conducted to assess general differences between the perceptions of the two genders regarding career choice factors, graduate training experiences, and job experiences and/or career options, and job satisfaction and salaries with univariate follow up analyses for significant MANOVAs and MANCOVAs. Statistically significant differences were observed between the two genders regarding their perceptions about the importance of compatibility with anticipated family responsibilities and service to others in determining career path; experiences with faculty, role models, and mentors, as well as gender-related items in the curriculum of graduate training programs; degree of mobility, career compromises and interruptions, availability of career advancement opportunities, and sexual harassment in job experiences; and satisfaction with pay for experience and overall salaries. Implications of these findings are addressed.
