Book Description
This book is a catalogue of a special exhibition (1907-1908) of Japanese sword guards, or tsuba, has been prepared by Mr. Okabe-Kakuya. To our knowledge it is the first attempt to treat the history of the tsuba and tsuba makers apart from the other branches of metal work which enter into the ornamentation of the Japanese sword. Of the three sections into which the book is divided, the first gives a brief general history of the art, specifying the different periods in which the artists worked, the various circumstances and influences which from time to time caused new developments of form and material, and the results due to these changes. The illustrations in this section are reproductions of drawings by Mr. Okabe from woodcuts in the Japanese books at the Museum. The second section consists of an alphabetical list of the more important schools of tsuba makers. The list of names given is strictly confined to those of men who actually made tsuba, and does not include artists who worked only in other forms of metal work. The third section serves as a guide to the present exhibition. It is accompanied with half-tone plates giving typical illustrations of various schools and artists. In instances where the execution, design, or material is of particular interest, special notes have been added.

Lethal Elegance

Lethal Elegance PDF Author: Joe Earle
Publisher: MFA Publications
ISBN: 9780878467754
Category : Samurai
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
As the "soul of the samurai," the sword is famously both the symbol and instrument of Japanese military prowess. Less known, at least in the west, is its role as a fashion accessory or status symbol. More than the weapon itself, it was the sword's metal fittings--from the hand guard to the small decorative plates on the hilt--that reflected the complexities of samurai life. Some fittings were meant to convey the honor and self-control expected of a samurai, while other, more flamboyant fittings reflected the samurai's leisure-time persona as "man about town." Later, when the wearing of swords spread beyond the samurai class, both the decorative function of the fittings and the variety of their designs increased, leading to some of the most accomplished metalwork ever created. Now in paperback for the first time, Lethal Elegance presents 150 of these remarkable sword fittings, and is one of the few books to focus on their styles and techniques. It discusses the visual effects achieved with different alloys, the evolution of fittings following changes in warfare, symbolism and standards for connoisseurship. Though these objects were created for violent ends, their variety and beauty also reveal them as wonders of self-expression.
