Book Description
Excerpt from Japanese Skipjack Studies: Translated From the Japanese Language With regard to the relation between the skipjack fishing situation and oceanographic conditions, a great number of reports have been published in the past on surface water temperature, the present author himself having published frequently on the subject in this journal, however, there has not yet been any thorough study of factors other than surface tempera ture. For the determination as a practical problem of the zone which connects the principal skipjack fishing grounds the apparent fishway the surface water temperature values alone do not sufficeo Furthermore, in explaining the skipjack fishing situation in the Satsunan and Zuneh areas there is much that cannot be understood from the water temperatures aloneo Further there is the general problem of the relationship between oceanographic conditions and how well the skipjack take to the bait° If we try to make a start at solving the problems in such an area, we experience considerable difficulty because the threads of all of the factors are entangled and there is a paucity of data other than surface water temperatures. Nevertheless, feeling desirous of seizing a clue to the solution of these problems, I have made two or three preliminary investigations, the results of which are reported below. Book Description
Excerpt from Spawning Grounds of Tuna and Skipjack: Translated From the Japanese Language by Scap Translators I believe the necessity exists for studying whether skipjack and tuna remain in specified localities at any certain period during their development, if coastal schools differ from migratory schools, and if a single large group migrates in the warm waters of the vast Pacific. In order to do this, however, it is important to study by some means the age of fish caught in the various areas. One method is by examining the rings appearing on scales and vertebrae. I feel that the selection of Palau as a principal research point is ideal as skipjack and tuna can be caught there throughout the year and it is near their presumed spawning grounds.
