Routledge Handbook of Corruption in Asia

Routledge Handbook of Corruption in Asia PDF Author: Ting Gong
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317507878
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 435

Book Description
Corruption in Asia ranges from the venal rent-seeking of local officials to the million-dollar bribes received by corrupt politicians; from excessive position-related consumption to future job offers in the private sector for compliant public servants; from money-laundering to ‘white elephant’ projects that do little more than line the pockets of developers and their political partners. The Routledge Handbook of Corruption in Asia addresses the theories, issues and trends in corruption and anticorruption reform that have emerged from this diverse experience. The book is divided into four major parts: corruption and the state; corruption and economic development; corruption and society; and controlling corruption: strategies, successes and failures. Chapters compare and contrast corruption in different social and institutional contexts, examine both successful and unsuccessful attempts to control it, and consider what lessons can be drawn from these Asian experiences. This academically rigorous and insightful book will be of interest to a wide range of students and scholars, particularly those of Asian studies, politics and sociology.

Book Description
March 11, 2011. The T hoku earthquake struck just before three on a Friday afternoon. Massive earthquake damage was followed by tsunami rising to heights of 40 meters that swept 10km inland, scouring the land of homes, school, communities, and people. The earthquake and tsunami alone were disasters of incredible proportion, resulting in over 15,000 deaths, over 100, 000 buildings destroyed, and economic losses estimated as high as $235 billion by the World Bank. And that was only the natural disaster. The manmade disaster began the same day, as the tsunami swept over the seawall of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, flooding the facility and destroying much of its equipment, including its onsite emergency power generators. Cut off from all external power sources, the reactors and spent fuel-rod assemblies began to overheat. Three reactors suffered meltdowns. Hydrogen gas explosions blew apart the outer containment buildings on three reactors. And the world watched as Japan struggled to bring the situation under control before the worst scenario came to pass. Despite further natural and manmade obstacles, the men and women at the plant succeeded in their efforts, gradually bringing the reactors under control, restoring power, and edging back, one inch at a time, from the very brink of disaster. This is their story, based on extensive interviews with the people who fought and won that battle, and especially with Masao Yoshida, the man who drove them all to get the job done. Here at last is the inside story of what they faced, what resources and information they had to work with, and why they made the decisions they did.

Book Description
Charged with murder and hiding out in the Mexican wilderness, Texas Ranger Danny Cavanaugh contemplates eating a bullet in the exact spot his father did years ago. But when he sees something strange at the nearby converted monastery, the cop inside him takes over. As he investigates, he meets a nearly naked woman running for her life. A judge in the International Court of Justice, Sydney Dumas thought she was there to discuss a secret lawsuit Japan is bringing against the United States. Meanwhile in Washington, D.C., a robbery attempt at the Library of Congress becomes an unimaginable test for newly elected President Jack Butcher. The nearly stolen document is a lost article of the U.S. Constitution, which contains evidence the Founding Fathers foresaw certain collapse for their new country. As Danny and Sydney race toward Washington, D.C. to reach President Butcher, they are hunted by a relentless killer dispatched by an organization known as The Group; they have infinite resources and will stop at nothing to reach their goal. Once Danny uncovers the link between the lawsuit, the lost Constitution article, and The Group, he discovers an unthinkable plot designed by a brilliant psychopath whose motive makes them question everything.
