The Discovery of Things
Author: Wolfgang-Rainer Mann
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691221596
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 243
Book Description
Aristotle's Categories can easily seem to be a statement of a naïve, pre-philosophical ontology, centered around ordinary items. Wolfgang-Rainer Mann argues that the treatise, in fact, presents a revolutionary metaphysical picture, one Aristotle arrives at by (implicitly) criticizing Plato and Plato's strange counterparts, the "Late-Learners" of the Sophist. As Mann shows, the Categories reflects Aristotle's discovery that ordinary items are things (objects with properties). Put most starkly, Mann contends that there were no things before Aristotle. The author's argument consists of two main elements. First, a careful investigation of Plato which aims to make sense of the odd-sounding suggestion that things do not show up as things in his ontology. Secondly, an exposition of the theoretical apparatus Aristotle introduces in the Categories--an exposition which shows how Plato's and the Late-Learners' metaphysical pictures cannot help but seem inadequate in light of that apparatus. In doing so, Mann reveals that Aristotle's conception of things--now so engrained in Western thought as to seem a natural expression of common sense--was really a hard-won philosophical achievement. Clear, subtle, and rigorously argued, The Discovery of Things will reshape our understanding of some of Aristotle's--and Plato's--most basic ideas.

Social Things
Author: Charles C. Lemert
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 9780742535480
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 254
Book Description
Once again, Lemert has revised and updated Social Things, a best seller that is admired by teachers, students, and even their parents for its riveting brilliance. In this edition, he challenges readers to appreciate the surprising story of how globalization requires even the most reluctant to engage with its strange effects. In a new and original chapter, Global Things Queer the Social, Lemert unblushingly explains that globalization became a dominant force in everyday life at the very time when ordinary life was threatened by extraordinary human crises of poverty and disease. The new world order is queer in more ways than one. It forces us to rethink social taboos, including those on talk about sex and sexualities. As in its earlier editions, Social Things excites, disturbs, and instructs readers who wonder what globalization means to them and how their sociological competence can contend with the way it emboldens people to look at the world honestly.

Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 76

Constantly in today's world, the Church has had to deal with a growing threat to its stability, that of rebellion against the very word of God in such a strong force that saying anything about the Bible in public forums brings a mass of abuse from the public. Chesterton recognized that this was happening back in his day and tried to address going concerns. The issues he raised nearly a century ago still ring true today and are as applicable now as they were back when this work was originally published.
