Italy's 'Southern Question'

Italy's 'Southern Question' PDF Author: Jane Schneider
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000184595
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
The ‘Southern Question' has been a major topic in Italian political, economic and cultural life for a century and more. During the Cold War, it was the justification for heavy government intervention. In contemporary Italy, a major part of the appeal of the Lombard League has been its promise to dissociate the South from the North, even to the point of secession. The South also remains a resonant theme in Italian literature. This interdisciplinary book endeavours to answer the following: - When did people begin to think of the South as a problem? - Who - intellectuals, statisticians, criminologists, political exiles, novelists (among them some important southerners) - contributed to the discourse about the South and why? - Did their view of the South correspond to any sort of reality? - What was glossed over or ignored in the generalized vision of the South as problematic? - What consequences has the ‘Question' had in controlling the imaginations and actions of intellectuals and those with political and other forms of power? - What alternative formulations might people create and live by if they were able to escape from the control of the ‘Question' and to imagine the political, economic and cultural differences within Italy in some other way? This timely book reveals how Southern Italians have been affected by distorted versions of a complex reality similar to the discourse of ‘Orientalism'. In situating the devaluation of Southern Italian culture in relation to the recent emergence of ‘anti-mafia' ideology in the South and the threat posed to national unity by the Lombard League, it also illuminates the world's stiff inter-regional competition for investment capital.

Benedetto Croce and the Birth of the Italian Republic, 1943–1952

Benedetto Croce and the Birth of the Italian Republic, 1943–1952 PDF Author: Fabio Fernando Rizi
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487504462
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
As president of the Italian Liberal Party, Benedetto Croce was one of the most influential intellectuals involved in Italian public affairs after the fall of Mussolini. Placing Croce at the centre of historical events between 1943 and 1952, this book details his participation in Italy's political life, and his major contributions to the rebirth of Italian democracy. Drawing on a great amount of primary material, including Croce's political speeches, correspondences, diaries, and official documents from post-war Italy, this book illuminates the dynamic and progressive nature of Croce's liberalism and the shortcomings of the old Liberal leaders. Providing a year-by-year account of Croce's initiatives, author Fabio Fernando Rizi fills the gap in Croce's biography, covering aspects of his public life often neglected, misinterpreted, or altogether ignored, and restores his standing among the founding fathers of modern Italy.

The Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, the World Bank and the Model for Italian Economic Development

The Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, the World Bank and the Model for Italian Economic Development PDF Author: Amedeo Lepore
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 152753801X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
This research, carried out in original documents by the World Bank, which were intended exclusively for internal use and were made available to scholars only a few years ago, tackles the theme of the extraordinary intervention in Southern Italy from an international perspective. The book provides an updated view of the issues concerning the regions of Southern Italy, as well as the solutions proposed for the “Southern Question” during the years of the post-war reconstruction of Italy, creating the only period of convergence – considering the whole of the history of united Italy – between Southern and Northern Italy and between the entire country and the most advanced Western economies during the golden age. The volume enhances our understanding of such a decisive development phase, especially within the framework of both Italian and international economic history, following the peacetime rebuilding of Italy and before the crisis of the 1970s, while providing very useful elements in order to analyse the current events of both the Mezzogiorno and all of Italy.

Why Italians Love to Talk About Food

Why Italians Love to Talk About Food PDF Author: Elena Kostioukovitch
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN: 1429935596
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 480

Book Description
Italians love to talk about food. The aroma of a simmering ragú, the bouquet of a local wine, the remembrance of a past meal: Italians discuss these details as naturally as we talk about politics or sports, and often with the same flared tempers. In Why Italians Love to Talk About Food, Elena Kostioukovitch explores the phenomenon that first struck her as a newcomer to Italy: the Italian "culinary code," or way of talking about food. Along the way, she captures the fierce local pride that gives Italian cuisine its remarkable diversity. To come to know Italian food is to discover the differences of taste, language, and attitude that separate a Sicilian from a Piedmontese or a Venetian from a Sardinian. Try tasting Piedmontese bagna cauda, then a Lombard cassoela, then lamb ala Romana: each is part of a unique culinary tradition. In this learned, charming, and entertaining narrative, Kostioukovitch takes us on a journey through one of the world's richest and most adored food cultures. Organized according to region and colorfully designed with illustrations, maps, menus, and glossaries, Why Italians Love to Talk About Food will allow any reader to become as versed in the ways of Italian cooking as the most seasoned of chefs. Food lovers, history buffs, and gourmands alike will savor this exceptional celebration of Italy's culinary gifts.
