In order to better understand what is involved in implementing a data processing system on a minicomputer, it is helpful to investigate and examine many key issues. These issues may be classified into software, hardware, and human factors considerations. Various tradeoffs and questions are analyzed, and possible compromises and solutions are offered. As an appendix, the thesis includes an instruction manual of a data processing system designed by the author for the U.S. Navy. This particular system automates logistics control and report-generating functions of the Supply Department for many Navy ships. As such, it exemplifies the use of minicomputers for data processing systems. Additionally, two other appendices include (1) a listing of the above mentioned computer program and (2) its flow chart. Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis, (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955.
