Book Description
High-resolution alpha particle and photon spectroscopy is applied to determining the ratios of 239Pu and 240Pu in isotopically mixed samples of less than a few thousand DPM. The utility of alpha-gamma coincidence and L-shell x-ray spectroscopy methods are explored. Experimental equipment, procedures and calibration methods are discussed. Minimum sample activities necessary for quantification are presented for each method. Instrumental and statistical uncertainties prevented reliable determination of isotopic ratios. Improvements in equipment are recommended to reduce uncertainties. (Author).

High-resolution Gamma-ray Isotopic Measurements of Uranium Plutonium Samples at IPPE in Support of Physical Inventory Taking Activities

Book Description
Measurement of various U and Pu samples by gamma-ray spectrometry were performed at the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering to support physical-inventory-taking activities under the Joint US-Russian MPC and A Program. The resulting data was analyzed by several different methods which included Canberra's MGA9.63 (Pu and MOX analysis) and MGAU (U analysis), EG and G Ortec's MGA++ (Pu and MOX analysis) and U235 (U analysis), and FRAM v2.2 (U and Pu analysis) provided by Los Alamos. The results indicate that all of these codes are capable of performing the isotopic analysis adequately. However, some additional modifications may be required to permit better measurement of some of the more unusual components in the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering (IPPE) inventory to meet the demands of inventory-taking activities.

Book Description
A nondestructive gamma-ray technique has been developed to determine plutonium isotopic ratios. The technique is based on the high-intensity, low-energy gamma rays at 43.48, 45.23, 51.63, 59.54, and 64.83 keV for 238Pu, 24°Pu, 239Pu, 241Am, and 241Pu, respectively. The results demonstrate that this technique can accurately measure plutonium samples in a timely manner and in a wide range of masses, isotopic contents, chemical forms, and ages from chemical processing.

Book Description
The nondestructive assay of plutonium is important as a safeguard tool in accounting for stategic nuclear material. Several nondestructive assay techniques, e.g., calorimetry and spontaneous fission assay detectors, require a knowledge of plutonium and americium isotopic ratios to convert their raw data to total grams of plutonium. This paper describes a nondestructive technique for calculating plutonium-238, plutonium-240, plutonium-241 and americium-241 relative to plutonium-239 from measured peak areas in the high resolution gamma-ray spectra of solid plutonium samples. Gamma-ray attenuation effects have been minimized by selecting sets of neighboring peaks in the spectrum whose components are due to the different isotopes. Since the detector efficiencies are approximately the same for adjacent peaks, the accuracy of the isotopic ratios are dependent on the half-lives, branching intensities and measured peak areas. The data presented describes the results obtained by analyzing gamma-ray spectra in the energy region from 120 to 700 keV. The majority of the data analyzed was obtained from plutonium material containing 6% plutonium-240. Sample weights varied from 0.25 g to approximately 1.2 kg. The methods have also been applied to plutonium samples containing up to 23% plutonium-240 with weights of 0.25 to 200g. Results obtained by gamma-ray spectroscopy are compared to chemical analyses of aliquots taken from the bulk samples.

A Study of In-line Plutonium Isotopic Analysis for Gaseous Plutonium Hexafluoride

Book Description
In-line plutonium isotopic analysis of gaseous plutonium hexafluoride (PuF6) is very important for process control and special nuclear material accountability in any plutonium-isotope-separation process that requires a gaseous phase. Although much effort had been devoted to analyze arbitrary plutonium samples, no isotopic analysis had been done on gaseous PuF6 samples. We have initiated a study on the use of a high-resolution, gamma-ray spectroscopy technique to analyze gaseous plutonium hexafluoride. For the first time, PuF6 gas samples with pressures varying from 0.15 to 31 torr, which were directly fed into a gas cell from a process flow loop, were measured. The isotopic results of these measurements agree very well with those of mass spectrometry measurements of solid PuF4. The precision of a 10-min measurement of a 10-torr reactor-grade PuF6 is 1.5% for STYPu, 0.22% for STZPu, 0.87% for SUPu, and 17.5% for SU Pu.
