The microstructures of production calandria tubes have been evaluated. specimens from these tubes are being irradiated in the advanced test reactor (atr) at idaho falls to study irradiation growth. a series of strip materials with controlled microstructures has been successfully prepared from common starting material. the grain sizes and dislocation densities span those available in production calandria tubes. specimens from these materials being irradiated in atr will reveal the effect of microstructure on irradiation growth.

Growth specimens made from zircaloy-2 calandria tube materials are being irradiated in the advanced test reactor at idaho falls. the sampling and measurement procedures used during the experiment are described and preliminary data are presented. the requirement of measuring specimen lengths to +- 0.5 mu m has been met. initial results are contrary to expectations and may reflect a transient behaviour caused by relaxation of micro-stresses within the specimens.

This report summarizes the irradiation growth measurements on zircaloy-2 specimens after second and third irradiations in the advanced test reactor at idaho falls as part of a candev work package to investigate the dimensional stability of calandria tube materials. some specimens have reached fluences of 1 x 10 sup(26) n.m sup(-2), e greater than 1 mev, corresponding to the fluence of pickering calandria tubes after 30 years of operation. the results exhibit large variability in growth behaviour between calandria tube materials from different reactors. most specimens have not yet attained steady state growth rates even at higher fluences.
