Atomic and Ionic Impact Phenomena on Metal Surfaces

Atomic and Ionic Impact Phenomena on Metal Surfaces PDF Author: M. Kaminsky

Book Description
The collisions of neutral or charged gaseous particles with solid surfaces govern many physical and chemical phenomena, as has been The gas/solid phenomena in turn depend on a recognized for a long time. great variety of processes such as the charge transfer of the gas/solid interface, adsorption and desorption, the energy transfer between an incident particle and the surface, etc. Our knowledge of these processes, however, is only fragmentary. This is partly due to the difficulty in adequately controlling the ex perimental conditions. Consequently, until recently the data were usually so complex that reliable information about a particular elementary process could not be deduced. Within the last five to ten years, however, the techniques of ultra-high vacuum and surface preparation have developed rapidly and there has been a booming and widespread interest in the role of gas/solid interactions in such diverse fields as plasma physics, thermonuclear reactions, thermionic energy conversion, ion propulsion, sputtering corrosion of the surface of satellites and ion engines, ion getter pumps, deposition of thin films, etc. This led to extensive investigations of numerous gas/solid phenomena, such as surface ionization, sputtering, emission of secondary electrons and ions from surfaces under atom and/or ion impact, ion neutralization, and the thermal accomodation of gaseous particles on surfaces. As a result, it has become possible to gather a variety of valuable information.

Thin Films From Free Atoms and Particles

Thin Films From Free Atoms and Particles PDF Author: Kenneth Klabunde
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323153488
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
Thin Films from Free Atoms and Particles is an eight-chapter text that describes the primary reaction modes of atoms or coordination-deficient particles. This book presents first an introduction to free atoms and particles, followed by a chapter describing the embryonic growth of films, such as dimers, trimers, and other small telomers formed and detected. The next chapters discuss the understanding of discharge processes for forming free atoms and particles. The remaining chapters deal with the technology, techniques, and materials in thin films. Physicists, engineers, materials scientists, and chemists will find this book of great value.

Inelastic Ion–Surface Collisions

Inelastic Ion–Surface Collisions PDF Author: N Tolk
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323154204
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
Inelastic Ion-Surface Collisions is a collection of papers presented at the 1976 International Workshop on Inelastic-Ion-Surface Collisions, held at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey. This book contains 12 chapters and begins with the identification and study of the underlying physical mechanisms associated with ionization, neutralization, and excitation responsible for the observed sputtering and particle backscattering outershell inelastic collision phenomena. Other chapters discuss the role of the bulk, the surface, and the near surface interaction regions on the degree of ionization, neutralization, and excitation. The remaining chapters deal with the oscillations in the energy dependence of backscattered ions, wake riding states, and optical polarization effects from beam transmission through tilted foils and from beam particle bombardment of surfaces at grazing incidence. This book is of great value to atomic, solid state, nuclear, surface, chemical, and space physicists.
