Book Description
The food and drinks sectors occupy the first place in Greek manufacturing industry. The share of food and drinks in total manufacturing industry value added reached 24.7 per cent in 1998. The average size of employment in food and drinks establishments is 5.2 persons per unit and is similar to that for manufacturing industry in general (4.9). Exports and imports of food and drinks increased during the 1980-95 period. However, imports increased faster than exports. As a result, the positive balance of trade turned negative. Although demand for food increased between 1980 and 1998, the share of private expenditure for food in total private expenditure decreased by 8.5 percentage points (thanks to correspondingly low elasticities). The corresponding share for drinks increased by one percentage point during the 1980-90 period and has remained constant since then. The aim of this book is to quantify Greek investors' behaviour at aggregate level for all sectors and all regions over the period 1981-1999, as well as at individual sector level. Investors' behaviour is examined by employing a synthesised traditional model. The traditional model is estimated using alternative panel data methods. First, the dynamic panel data model is estimated with a common intercept by employing the Generalised Method of Moments (GMM). The dynamic panel data formulation is also estimated using the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation technique.

Food Security and Sustainability

Food Security and Sustainability PDF Author: George Mergos
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319407902
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
This edited volume brings together contributions from experts on a range of food security issues, and examines them through a number of case studies. A Millennium Development goal and important policy concern, food security is experiencing renewed interest due to globalisation, which has led to population affluence, changing consumption, and production and trade patterns. The authors discuss how globalisation brings a new dimension to the discussion on public policy on food security, and consider the extent to which Global Value Chains (GVCs) dominate trade, investment and international agricultural markets. Food Security and Sustainability therefore sheds new light on the nexus of food security and globalization, as well as its implications for investment and financing in the agro-food sector. The volume draws on papers presented at the inaugural Workshop of the Mediterranean Center for Food Security and Sustainable Growth (MED-SEC), an international network of academics focusing on issues of development, sustainability and food security.

How Greece Can Produce More Food (Classic Reprint)

How Greece Can Produce More Food (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Cyril George Hopkins

Book Description
Excerpt from How Greece Can Produce More Food A wise Christian statesman once said that a nation should keep its promises and preserve its honor, even tho it perish in the effort. He was a practical statesman as well as an idealist; for it was he who first suggested that the American Red Cross Commission to Greece should undertake, along with its program of emergency relief, an agricultural program, with a view to increasing the food production of the country and thus permanently benefiting the entire population. An Agricultural Department was accordingly made a part of the Commission, and an American scientist who had won world-wide dis tinction for his practical success in applying to the problem of food production the results of his investigation of the soil, was secured as head of this Department. Major Hopkins has traveled extensively in Greece, has had analyses made of the soils of various regions, and has conducted experiments whose purpose is to enable the farmer to pro duce larger crops as the reward of his labors. This report of the Department presents the simple truth regarding the conditions which now exist in Greece, and recommends some practical scientific methods for greatly improving these conditions. It is designed to serve Greece and her people, and this result will be attained if the recommendations are put into practice. This booklet is presented not only to farmers and landowners, but also to merchants, bankers, teachers, and statesmen; for it is only by the intelligent efforts and influence of all that food production can be largely and permanently increased.
