Book Description
Failure mechanism of 20MnMoNi55 steel in the lower self of ductile to brittle transition (DBT) region is considered as brittle fracture but it has been observed from the experimental analysis of stress-strain diagram that clear plastic deformation is shown by the material before failure. Therefore, strain correction is implemented in the cleavage fracture model proposed by different researchers in the lower self of the DBT region with the help of finite element analysis. To avoid a huge number of experiments being performed, Monte Carlo simulation is used to generate a huge number of random data at different temperatures in the lower self of the DBT region for calibration of the cleavage parameters with the help of the master curve methodology. Fracture toughness calculated after strain correction through different models are validated with experimental results for the different probability of failures.

Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials

Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials PDF Author: D.M.R. Taplin
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483153428
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 873

Book Description
Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials: Volume 1s—An Overview contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Fracture held at the University of Waterloo, Canada, in June 1977. The papers review the state of the art with respect to fracture in a wide range of materials such as metals and alloys, polymers, ceramics, and composites. This volume is comprised of 40 chapters and opens with a discussion on progress in the development of elementary fracture mechanism maps and their application to metal deformation processes, along with micro-mechanisms of fracture and the fracture toughness of engineering alloys. The next section is devoted to the fracture of large-scale structures such as steel structures, aircraft, cargo containment systems, nuclear reactors, and pressure vessels. Fracture at high temperatures and in sensitive environments is then explored, paying particular attention to creep failure by cavitation under non-steady conditions; the effects of hydrogen and impurities on brittle fracture in steel; and mechanism of embrittlement and brittle fracture in liquid metal environments. The remaining chapters consider the fracture of non-metallic materials as well as developments and concepts in the application of fracture mechanics. This book will be of interest to metallurgists, materials scientists, and structural and mechanical engineers.

Fracture Toughness of Pressure Vessel Materials for Light Water Reactors

Fracture Toughness of Pressure Vessel Materials for Light Water Reactors PDF Author: F. J. Loss

Book Description
This report describes progress in a cooperative research program between the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and NRL on the fracture toughness of steels for nuclear reactor pressure vessels. For its contribution EPRI furnished a major protion of the materials and test specimens for the study by NRL. The program is also being conducted in collaboration with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research, and the Office of Naval Research. Related NRC sponsored work of broader scope is underway at NRL. A portion of the NRC work pertaining to the fracture toughness of nuclear pressure boundary materials is also reported here because of its relevance to the subject effort. The principal objectives of this program are: (1) to characterize the dynamic fracture initiation toughness K sub Id of three heats of LWR pressure vessel steel, (2) to develop experimental and analytical techniques for the interpretation and analysis of notched, three-point bend specimen behavior under impact loading, and (3) to assess the validity of plane strain K sub Id values as projected from the elastic plastic (J integral) analysis of smaller specimens. The present report describes progress in the dynamic toughness assessment of program materials by means of 1-in. (25mm) bend and precracked Charpy-V specimens. Also described is a one-dimensional, theoretical characterization of the forces and bending moments developed during impact of a notched beam. (Author).

Local Approach to Fracture

Local Approach to Fracture PDF Author: Jacques Besson
Publisher: Presses des MINES
ISBN: 2911762738
Category : Fracture mechanics
Languages : en
Pages : 121

Book Description
Improving the structural integrity together with the performance (weight, time to failure,...) of structures requires a persisting effort in the field of mechanics of materials and structures. This can be achieved by a better understanding of the relationships between microscopic mechanisms and the macroscopic material behavior and structural response with respect to damage and fracture. This improvement strategy of materials, structures and assement methods can be described as local approach to fracture. The local approach to fracture is an active research field. Initially developped in the context of steel structures (pressure vessels), its application domain has become wider and now deals with various kinds of materials (metallic alloys, metal matrix composites, polymers, elastomers, concrete) as well as various physical deformation and damage mechanisms (plasticity, creep, fatigue, ductile fracture, brittle fracture, ...). This volume contains the proceedings on an international conference dedicated to these issues.

Constraint Effects in Fracture

Book Description
Papers presented at the symposium on [title] held in Indianapolis, Indiana, May 1991, provide a framework for quantifying constraint effects in terms of both continuum mechanics and micro-mechanical modeling approaches. Such a framework is useful in establishing accurate predictions of the fracture
