Investigation of Methods for Determining Actual Flaw Size in Materials by Nondestructive Ultrasonic Means

Investigation of Methods for Determining Actual Flaw Size in Materials by Nondestructive Ultrasonic Means PDF Author: Leo J. Anderson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Metals
Languages : en
Pages : 84

Book Description
The work effort under Contract AF 33(616)-7279 was directed toward the development and evaluation of techniques for determining actual flaw size, orientation geometry in materials by nondestructive ultrasonic means. The program led to the development of a breadboard instrument capable of presenting an isometric, three0-dimensional projection of inconsistencies in metal parts. The three dimensional display of the material was achieved by the design of a special mechanical manipulator and presentation system employing a single oscillating transducer. With the theory and practicality thus demonstrated, attention to refinements to increase the inspection rate an imporve information display for in-process viewing and permanent recording was undertaken which led to the development of a fully operational self-contained nondestructive testing instrument. This new instrument represents a new technology using sound beam properties in materials as operating parameters to produce an isometric presentation on a cathode ray tube. The end result is an operational instrument capable of rapid scan rates and a multi-purpose display system for setup, analysis by in-process viewing, and flaw are localization.

Ultrasonic Testing of Materials

Ultrasonic Testing of Materials PDF Author: Josef Krautkrämer

Book Description
The amendments of this third English edition with respect to the second one concern beside some printing errors the replacement of some pictures in part D by more modern ones and updating the list of stand ards to the state of the fourth German edition. J OSEF KRAUTKRÄMER Cologne, January 1983 Preface to the Second Edition This seeond English edition is based on the third German edition. In view of most recent teehnologieal advanees it has beeome neeessary in many instanees to supplement the seeond German edition and to revise some parts completely. In addition to piezo-eleetric methods, others are now also extensively diseussed in Chapter 8. As for the intensity method, ultrasonie holo graphy is treated in the new Seetion 9. 4. In Part B, for reasons of syste maties, the resonanee method has been ineluded under transit-time methods. It appeared neeessary to elaborate in greater detail the defini tion of the properties of pulse-echo testing equipment and their measure ments (10. 4). The more recent findings of pulse speetroscopy (5. 6) and sound-emission analysis (12) are mentioned only in passing because their significanee is still controversial. Apart from numerous additions, partieularly those coneerning automatie testing installations, Part C also eontains a new chapter whieh deals with tests on nu eIe ar reactors (28), as weIl as abrief diseussion of surfaee-hardness tests (32. 4). It beeame impossible to include a critieal analysis of the principal standards in Chapter 33.

Book Description
Ultrasonic Methods of Non-Destructive Testing covers the basic principles and practices of ultrasonic testing, starting with the basic theory of vibration and propagation, design and properties and probes, and then proceeding to the principles and practice of the various ultrasonic techniques for different types of components and structures, both metallic and non-metallic. The design and operation of various types of equipment are covered and references to appropriate national and international standards are provided. Numerous applications are discussed comprehensively and special attention is paid to latest developments. A large number of references is provided so as to enable the reader to obtain further information.

Improving the Effectiveness and Reliability of Non-Destructive Testing

Improving the Effectiveness and Reliability of Non-Destructive Testing PDF Author: W.E. Gardner
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483286983
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
This book is concerned with the two most important aspects of the use of non-destructive testing. Firstly, the effectiveness of procedures to detect and size the defects present irrespective of the geometry, materials involved or environment. Secondly, the reliability of instrumentation and personnel to perform the specified procedures. Validation and certification techniques required for the justification of safe operation of a plant are also discussed. Experts in industries where safety and defect detection are of paramount importance have made valuable contributions drawn from their experience to make this book essential reading for anyone responsible for safety of plant operation. Illustrated throughout, the book is also of interest to mechanical and structural engineers, researchers and inspectors as well as being a useful reference tool for graduate students.

Study on the Ultrasonic Flaw Size Estimation by the Scanning Method with Relative Threshold

Study on the Ultrasonic Flaw Size Estimation by the Scanning Method with Relative Threshold PDF Author: UDO. SCHLENGERMANN

Book Description
THE DETERMINATION OF THE SHAPE AND THE SIZE OF A DISCONTINUITY HAS BECOME DECISIVE IN THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACCEPTABILITY OF A PRODUCT. WITHIN ULTRASONIC TECHNIQUES THERE ARE DIFFERENT METHODS AVAILABLE FOR THIS PURPOSE. AS THE DGS METHOD IS OPERATING WITH THE IDEALIZED SHAPE OF A CIRCULAR REFLECTOR AND THEREFORE DOES NOT INDICATE THE TRUE TARGET AREA BUT AN EQUIVALENT FLAW SIZE, IN SPECIAL CASES ONE TRIES TO RE-ESTABLISH THE OLD METHOD OF FLAW CONTOUR SCANNING (GO-AROUND -METHOD), THOUGH ORIGINALLY IT WAS USED FOR LARGE TARGETS ONLY. FOR THE FLAW CONTOUR SCANNING METHOD UNTIL NOW, THEORETICAL STATEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE ONLY IN THE FAR FIELD AND ONLY FOR SMALL REFLECTORS. IN PRACTICE MOSTLY OTHER CONDITIONS ARE MET WITH, HOWEVER. THEREFORE THE LIMITS FOR THE USABILITY OF THIS METHOD (WITH RELATIVE THRESHOLD) HAVE BEEN DETERMINED BY EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES, AND THE RESPECTIVE CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN FOR MATERIAL TESTING BY ULTRASOUND.

Ultrasonic and Advanced Methods for Nondestructive Testing and Material Characterization

Ultrasonic and Advanced Methods for Nondestructive Testing and Material Characterization PDF Author: C. H. Chen
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812770941
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 682

Book Description
Ultrasonic methods have been very popular in nondestructive testing and characterization of materials. This book deals with both industrial ultrasound and medical ultrasound. The advantages of ultrasound include flexibility, low cost, in-line operation, and providing data in both signal and image formats for further analysis. The book devotes 11 chapters to ultrasonic methods. However, ultrasonic methods can be much less effective with some applications. So the book also has 14 chapters catering to other or advanced methods for nondestructive testing or material characterization. Topics like structural health monitoring, Terahertz methods, X-ray and thermography methods are presented. Besides different sensors for nondestructive testing, the book places much emphasis on signal/image processing and pattern recognition of the signals acquired.
