Book Description
According to the General Design Memorandum for the Shelbyville Dam on the Kaskaskia River in Southern Illinois, upstream from the Carlyle Reservoir, approximately 50,000 cu yd of mass concrete and 37,000 cu yd of reinforced concrete will be required for the flood control project. The investigation was conducted to evaluate the suitability of concrete aggregate from nine sources for inclusion as acceptable sources in the Design Memorandum.

Investigation of Concrete Aggregate and Riprap Stone for the Rend Lake Reservoir, St. Louis District

Investigation of Concrete Aggregate and Riprap Stone for the Rend Lake Reservoir, St. Louis District PDF Author: ARMY ENGINEER WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION VICKSBURG MISS.

Book Description
Five materials were tested for suitability for use as riprap stone; four materials were crushed and graded into 11/2-3 in., 3/4-11/2 in., and No. 4-3/4 in. size groups and tested for suitab ility for use as a concrete coarse aggregate; and three natural sands were tested for suitability for use as concrete fine aggregate with or without addition of small size fractions from an admixture and which was tested for suitability for this use. The results of the tests indicate that the materials were all essentially satisfactory for the purposes for which they were tested. However, the use of the aggregates in concrete would necessitate a low alkali cement being specified, and the shaly fractions of the stone could become concentrated enough in some samples to have an adverse effect upon the ability of the riprap stone or coarse aggregate to withstand severe weathering. Book Description
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 4-1/2-cu-yd-capacity, stationary-drum concrete mixer with a spiral blade being used by the U.S. Army Engineer District, St. Louis, to mix concrete for the spillway at Shelbyville Dam. Batches of four concrete mixtures were mixed, sampled, and tested for coarse aggreate content, unit weight of air-free mortar, and water and cement content of the mortar. Test results for concrete having a slump of 2-1/2 plus or minus 1 in. indicated that the mixer would satisfactorily mix 4 cu yd of 3-in., or smaller, maximum-size-aggregate concrete and 3 cu yd of 6-in. maximum-size-aggregate concrete in either 2 or 1-1/2 minutes. One-minute mixing time was insufficient to blend the constituents into a uniform mass. Two-minute mixing did not give satisfactory mixing for relatively harsh mixtures (1-1/4-in. slump or less).
