Trade Credit and Bank Credit
Author: Inessa Love
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN:
Category : Bank loans
Languages : en
Pages : 34
Book Description
"The authors study the effect of financial crises on trade credit in a sample of 890 firms in six emerging economies. They find that although provision of trade credit increases right after the crisis, it consequently collapses in the following months and years. The authors observe that firms with weaker financial position (for example, high pre-crisis level of short-term debt and low cash stocks and cash flows) are more likely to reduce trade credit provided to their customers. This suggests that the decline in aggregate credit provision is driven by the reduction in the supply of trade credit, which follows the bank credit crunch. The results are consistent with the "redistribution view" of trade credit provision, in which bank credit is redistributed by way of trade credit by the firms with stronger financial position to the firms with weaker financial stand "--World Bank web site.

Financing Patterns Around the World
Author: Thorsten Beck
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN:
Category : Business enterprises
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
Using a firm-level survey database covering 48 countries, Beck, Demirgüç-Kunt, and Maksimovic investigate whether differences in financial and legal development affect the way firms finance their investments. The results indicate that external financing of investments is not a function of institutions, although the form of external finance is. The authors identify two explanations for this. First, legal and financial institutions affect different types of external finance in offsetting ways. Second, firm size is an important determinant of whether firms can have access to different types of external finance. Larger firms with financing needs are more likely to use external finance compared with small firms. The results also indicate that these firms are more likely to use external finance in more developed financial systems, particularly debt and equity finance. The authors also find evidence consistent with the pecking order theory in financially developed countries, particularly for large firms. This paper--a product of Finance, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to understand firms' access to financial services.

Revisiting Risk-Weighted Assets
Author: Vanessa Le Leslé
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1475502656
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 50
Book Description
In this paper, we provide an overview of the concerns surrounding the variations in the calculation of risk-weighted assets (RWAs) across banks and jurisdictions and how this might undermine the Basel III capital adequacy framework. We discuss the key drivers behind the differences in these calculations, drawing upon a sample of systemically important banks from Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. We then discuss a range of policy options that could be explored to fix the actual and perceived problems with RWAs, and improve the use of risk-sensitive capital ratios.

The Best of Wilmott 1
Author: Paul Wilmott
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 047002352X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 458
Book Description
November 11th 2003 saw a landmark event take place in London. As the first conference designed for quants by quants the Quantitative Finance Review 2003, moved away from the anonymous bazaars that have become the norm, and instead delivered valuable information to market practitioners with the greatest interest. The roster of speakers was phenomenal, ranging from founding fathers to bright young things, discussing the latest developments, with a specific emphasis on the burgeoning field of credit derivatives. You really had to be there. Until now, at least. The Best of Wilmott 1: Including the latest research from Quantitative Finance Review 2003 contains these first-class articles, originally presented at the QFR 2003, along with a collection of selected technical papers from Wilmott magazine. In publishing this book we hope to share some of the great insights that, until now, only delegates at QFR 2003 were privy to, and give you some idea why Wilmott magazine is the most talked about periodical in the market. Including articles from luminaries such as Ed Thorp, Jean-Philippe Bouchaud, Philipp Schoenbucher, Pat Hagan, Ephraim Clark, Marc Potters, Peter Jaeckel and Paul Wilmott, this collection is a must for anyone working in the field of quantitative finance. The articles cover a wide range of topics: * Psychology in Financial Markets * Measuring Country Risk as Implied Volatility * The Equity-to-Credit Problem * Introducing Variety in Risk Management * The Art and Science of Curve Building * Next Generation Models for Convertible Bonds with Credit Risk * Stochastic Volatility and Mean-variance Analysis * Cliquet Options and Volatility Models And as they say at the end of (most) Bond movies The Best of Wilmott... will return on an annual basis.

Mortgage Defaults
Author: Juan Carlos Hatchondo
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1463954778
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 33
Book Description
This paper incorporates house price risk and mortgages into a standard incomplete market (SIM) model. The model is calibrated to match U.S. data and accounts for non-targeted features of the data such as the distribution of down payments, the life-cycle profile of home ownership, and the mortgage default rate. The average coefficients that measure the agents' ability to self-insure against income shocks are similar to those of a SIM model without housing but housing increases the values of these coefficients for younger agents. The response of consumption to house price shocks is minimal. The introduction of minimum down payments or income garnishment benefits a majority of the population.
