This thesis concerns computation with finite group presentations and its application to resolve certain open problems of Kim and Kostrikin. We use the low-index subgroups and abelian quotient invariants algorithms to show that each member of a certain family of finitely-pesented groups is infinite. We present a new algorithm for determining which generalised dihedral groups are quotients of a given finitely-presented group, and use this to show that the groups in another family are pairwise non-isomorphic. Also we describe the method of 'pictures' over group presentations, discussing what they represent and how they can be used to obtain information about the group.

Research in computational group theory, an active subfield of computational algebra, has emphasised three areas: finite permutation groups, finite solvable groups, and finitely presented groups. This book deals with the third of these areas. The author emphasises the connections with fundamental algorithms from theoretical computer science, particularly the theory of automata and formal languages, computational number theory, and computational commutative algebra. The LLL lattice reduction algorithm and various algorithms for Hermite and Smith normal forms from computational number theory are used to study the abelian quotients of a finitely presented group. This dissertation is devoted to the study of self-similar groups and related topics. It consists of three parts. The first part is devoted to the study of examples of finitely generated amenable groups for which every finitely presented cover contains non-abelian free subgroups. The study of these examples was motivated by natural questions about finiteness properties of finitely generated groups. We show that many examples of amenable self-similar groups studied in the literature cannot be covered by finitely presented amenable groups. We investigate the class of contracting self-similar groups from this perspective and formulate a general result which is used to detect this property. As an application we show that almost all known examples of groups of intermediate growth cannot be covered by finitely presented amenable groups. The latter is related to the problem of the existence of finitely presented groups of intermediate growth. The second part focuses on the study of one important example of a self-similar group called the first Grigorchuk group G, from the viewpoint of pro finite groups. We investigate finite quotients of this group related to presentations and group (co)homology. As an outcome of this investigation we prove that the pro finite completion G_hat of this group is not finitely presented as a pro finite group. The last part focuses on a class of recursive group presentations known as L-presentations, which appear in the study of self-similar groups. We investigate the relation of such presentations with the normal subgroup structure of finitely presented groups and show that normal subgroups with finite cyclic quotient of finitely presented groups have such presentations. The n-dimensional representations, over an algebraically closed characteristic zero field k, of a finitely generated group are parameterized by an affine algebraic variety over k. The tangent spaces of this variety are subspaces of spaces of one-cocycles and thus the geometry of the variety is locally related to the cohomology of the group. The cohomology is also related to the prounipotent radical of the proalgebraic hull of the group. This paper exploits these two relations to compute dimensions of representation varieties, especially for nilpotent groups and their generalizations.
