Excessive consumption of fossil fuel leading to high environmental cost and the possibility of exhaustion of these nonrenewable energies is a compelling man to switch to alternative energy sources. These resources include renewable energies that are clean and sustainable. Renewable energy is such energy sources that are naturally replenished and are abundantly available. These energy sources beget from solar energy, wind, geothermal and hydro-power plants, etc. Therefore, instead of growing reliance on declining underground resources (fossil fuel resources), it must invest in the development of renewable energy utilization. This paper aims to provide renewable energy consumption patterns, in the long run, incorporating economic growth and fossil fuel energy consumption. In this analysis four, South Asian counties have been taken. These are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri-Lanka. By analyzing the data from 1990 -2014 with the Johansen Co-integration Method, renewable energy consumption is negatively related to economic growth (except India), whereas fossil fuel energy consumption is increasing with economic growth in the long run for the mentioned South Asian counties. Considering the climate issues, we addressed the opportunities and challenges providing some policy recommendations to increase renewable energy consumption.

Traditional dependence on the use of non-renewable energy resources has led to adverse socioeconomic and environmental complications in almost all of the South Asian economies. Moreover, the geographical locations have made these nations extremely vulnerable to the global climate changes. Thus, a transition from non-renewable to renewable energy consumption is of immense significance from the perspective of sustainable development in this region. Against this backdrop, the focus of this paper is aimed to empirically shed light on the role of greater trade openness and the simultaneous international fund inflows on facilitation of the renewable energy transition across Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This paper incorporated annual data stemming from 2000 to 2017 and employed the Panel-Corrected Standard Error regression methodology. This paper also estimates the threshold level of GDP growth rate facilitating renewable energy transition in the five aforesaid South Asian economies. Furthermore, panel Granger causality test was applied to distinguish the possible causal associations between the variables in the long run. In light of the estimated results, it is found that trade openness enables renewable energy transition and all the three sources of foreign inflows stimulate positive impacts on renewable energy consumption trends in the selected economies. Moreover, a non-linear relationship between renewable energy transition and GDP growth rate is also revealed from the statistical estimates.

The emergence of renewable energy as an alternative to non-renewable energy sources has garnered a great deal of attention in crafting of sustainable energy policies. Motivated by this, the present study investigates the impact of renewable and non-renewable energy use on economic growth in India within the energy consumption-growth framework over the period 1971-2012. A newly proposed Bayer and Hanck combined test and autoregressive distributed lags bound testing approach to cointegration and vector error correction model for Granger casualty are used in a multivariate framework wherein trade openness and financial development are included as additional variables. Empirical evidence confirms the existence of a long run equilibrium relationship among the competing variables. The results indicate that non-renewable energy consumption has a long run significant positive effect on India's economic growth. In sharp contrast, the long run elasticity of economic growth with respect to renewable energy consumption is found to be statistically insignificant. In addition, it is shown that a bidirectional causality exists between nonrenewable energy use and economic growth in both the long run and short run. Based on the findings, it is suggested that a non-renewable energy conversation policy may retard economic growth in India if initiated without due regard to renewable energy sources.
