Excerpt from Introduzione Allo Studio della Filosofia, Vol. 1 Lo scritto presente è il semplice preliminare di un'opera che dovrebbe comprendere, se non tutta la filosofia, almeno le parti principali di essa. Della quale opera ho pronta quasi tutta la materia; ma non se se potrò compilarla, e ridurla in grado di essere divulgata. Non per tanto la pre sente scrittura potrà stare da sè; parendomi ch'ella contenga quanto si richiede ad essere compresa dai lettori esercitati negli studi speculativi. Ella si divide in due libri, l'uno dottrinale e l'altro storico. Nel primo comincio collo stabilire, che aldì d'oggi in Europa non ri ha più filo sofia e siccome questa sentenza può parer singolare a chi giudica delle cose dalle parole, quando il nome di filosofia e i suoi derivativi, cor rono cosi frequenti sulle bocche o sulle penne degli uomini mi fo de bito di comprovarla, discorrendo per le varie cause, che partorironola declinazione degli studi filosofici, e mostrandone presente e visibile l'ef fette. Questa è la materia dei tre primi capitoli. Nè voglio però negare che fioriscano ingegni vasti e profondi, attissimi alle speculazioni più no condite e sublimi; ma altro è la filosofia, altro sono i filosofi; e si può aver facoltà di ben ragionare, senza mettere in atto questa potenza. Un cattivo metodo, e l'uso di certi falsi principii, resi universali e auto revoli da una usanza inveternta, possono sviare i migliori ingegni. Non nego eziandio che il nostro secolo possa lodarsi nelle scienze razionali di alcuni pregevoli lavori, onde avrò nel séguito occasione di discorrere; ma noto che questi lavori risguardano le parti accessorie, secondarie, e la dipendenza della filosofia, anzichè la sostanza di essa. Or, quando le parti vitali e le radici di questa nobile scienza siano neglette, e i suoi ordini intrinsecamente viziosi; vcggasi se si può dire con verità che la illosofia sia viva, benchè si attende da alcuni felicemente a qualche ramo degli studi filosofici. Certo, se l'arte del guarire si riducesse a cu rare il patereccio o il mal de'pendi e la dottrina del vegetabili econo stere le erbe del proprio orto, niuno vorrebbe affermare che la chirur gia, la medicina, la botanica fossero arti e scienze vive. Ma anche que gli onorevoli cultori di cose tllosciiche sono oggi molto rari; tanto che, se uno scritto di qualche nervo, appartenente alla metafisiche, si pub blicasse in Europa, il numero dei sufficienti estimatori atti ad intenderlo e ad apprezzarle, si ridurrebbe a molto pochi; come accadeva alla ma tematica sublime nei tempi di Cartesio. Di che porgo una prova il ve dere, quali miserie in Francia ed altrove salgano in grido di opere rag guardevoli, e procaccino agli autori fama di tllosofi; laddove alcuni al tri scritti smi: uratamente superiori giacciono non intesi e dimenticati.
