Book Description
Excerpt from Introductory Language Lessons IT is of the first importance that children should be induced to speak; that they should talk of the affairs in which they are interested and about the things they know. With this as a basis, the teacher can lead them to speak correctly by show ing them the proper forms, and later on can make them speak easily and fluently by an abundance of exercises. We have all observed that children are eager to discuss that which is of absorbing interest at the moment. When their minds are filled with a stimulating idea, they express them selves abundantly. Their thoughts literally clamor for ex pression. Obviously we should first provide this stimulant for language, and then we may care for the manner of its expression. The Language of Pupils. - Children come to school with all the expressions of their early association. Frequently they have been taught or allowed to speak incorrectly or loosely. These defects the teacher should correct constantly, putting the correct forms on the board for the pupils to see and repeat. No reason need be assigned for the correctness of certain forms, but they should be given as simple facts to be acquired as a habit of speech. Book Description
Excerpt from First Book in French: Or a Practical Introduction to Reading, Writing, and Speaking the French Language Although this little book can very well be dispensed with by persons passed their childhood, yet it is believed that learners generally will find their satisfaction in the study increased, and their ultimate proficiency advanced, by commencing with it. Those, also, who find it neces sary, in a short time, to obtain such an acquaintance with the language as may be of practical use, without master ing the whole grammar, will find this book the best fitted for their purpose. Although containing but sixty-four short and simple lessons, it teaches all those principles of the language which are the most commonly used in conversation; and he who has studied it thoroughly can communicate his ideas orally in the language, and make his way in French society with little feeling of incon venience.
