Finding Meaning in the Text

Finding Meaning in the Text PDF Author: W. Edward Glenny
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004176381
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 325

Book Description
This book offers a thorough analysis of the translation technique and theology of LXX-Amos, which will be valuable for those studying LXX-Amos and for those doing textual criticism in the Hebrew text of Amos. It analyzes the literalness of the translation, the rendering of difficult and unknown words, and the rendering of visually ambiguous phenomena, like homonyms, homographs, and word divisions. The evidence suggests the translator worked from a text very similar to the MT. He reveals his biases as he struggles with the difficult and obscure sections of his source text. He exhibits an anti-Syrian and anti-Samaritan bias as well as interest in Gentiles, eschatology, and messianism.

YHWH

YHWH PDF Author: Terry R. Kern
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
YHWH Billions of people all around the earth believe in the existence of a Supreme Being that we call by His title, God. The very first verse of the Old Testament of the Jewish and Christian Bible tells us "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) But the vast majority of those people who read the Bible (Jew or Gentile) do not know that "God" is not His name. He has a name - a proper name and His personal name - but most people do not even know what it is. In addition to that, He has made it extremely clear throughout the Bible that His name is very important to Him. His name has deep and powerful meaning and He has told us that it is His name forever. He has also repeatedly declared that He wants to be known by His name throughout the whole earth. His name is even printed in the Bible over 6828 times. That's right. He had the writers of the Bible write down His name that many times. So, what is His name? YHWH is His name. This book is about YHWH. It is "all about His name." Pastor Terry grew up on a farm in northern North Dakota. He met his wife, Sandie, at college, and they recently celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. YHWH blessed them with four wonderful sons and eight wonderful grandchildren. After graduating from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1979, Pastor Terry has pastored churches in Texas, Minnesota, and North Dakota. Currently he is the Pastor of Teaching and Preaching at Truth Fellowship Live Church in Bismarck, North Dakota. Truth Fellowship Live (TFL) is a church that was planted in 2010 by Pastor Terry and a group of men and women who were committed to having a church where YHWH's Word is faithfully and carefully taught and proclaimed. This is in accordance with the direct and specific command of 2 Timothy 4:1--5. This Scriptural admonition to pastors and church leaders has been Pastor Terry's mission, vision, and passion throughout his life of being YHWH's servant

Flores Florentino

Flores Florentino PDF Author: Anthony Hilhorst
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047423097
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 866

Book Description
This volume contains forty-eight essays, presented by friends, colleagues and students from many countries, in honour of Florentino García Martínez, director of the Groningen Qumran Institute, editor-in-chief of the Journal for the Study of Judaism, and professor in Leuven. The majority of the essays are in the areas of the honoree’s own scholarship and interests, including primarily Qumranica, but also many other fields of Second Temple Judaism, from late biblical texts and Septuagint up to early rabbinic writings. Florentino’s own polyglottism, evident from his bibliography, and his close relations with many scholars from Southern Europe, is reflected in the inclusion of a few French, Spanish and Italian articles in this volume.

The Psalms and their Readers

The Psalms and their Readers PDF Author: Donald K. Berry
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 0567276732
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
A reader-oriented approach provides a substantially new angle of vision on Psalm 18 and Psalms study in general. Reader-based interpretation is compared to conventional methodologies by means of four separate analyses of Psalm 18: a textual study, a form-critical explication, a rhetorical study, and an experimental reader-oriented study involving the following strategies. Initially, the components of the text are considered as networks of signals for the reader. Secondly, the text's speech acts are isolated and typified. Thirdly, the ancient and contemporary contexts for the reading of the psalm are examined. The reader-oriented study culminates in two perspectives upon Psalm 18. The psalm may be read as a ritual speech act performed by the community of ancient worshippers, or as a lyric poem that each contemporary reader experiences by identification with the speaker. The concluding chapter reviews each of the methodologies, evaluating strengths and weaknesses, as well as interrelationships among methods.
