This book presents various methods for calculating the extent of agreement among raters for different types of ratings. Some of the methods initially developed for nominal-scale ratings only, are extended in this book to ordinal and interval scales as well. To ensure an adequate level of sophistication in the treatment of this topic, the precision aspects associated with the agreement coefficients are treated. New methods begin with the simple scenario of 2 raters and 2 response categories before being extended to the more complex situation of multiple raters, and multiple-level nominal, ordinal and interval scales. Cohen's Kappa coefficient is one of the most widely-used agreement coefficients among researchers, despite its tendency to yield controvertial results. Kappa and its various versions have raised concerns among practitioners and showed limitations, which are well-documented in the literature. The primary objective of this book is to show practitioners simple step-by-step approaches for organizing rating data, creating SAS datasets, and using appropriate SAS procedures, or special SAS macro programs to compute various inter-rater reliability coefficients. The author always starts with a brief and non-mathematical description of the agreement coefficients used in this book, before showing how they are calculated with SAS. The non-mathematical description of these coefficients is done using simple numeric examples to show their functionality. The author offers practical SAS solutions for 2 raters as well as for 3 raters and more. The FREQ procedure of SAS offers the calculation of Cohen's Kappa as an option, when the number of raters is limited to 2. The introduction of this feature is without doubt a very welcome addition to the system. But in addition to offering only Kappa as the only agreement coefficient, the use of FREQ to compute Kappa is full of pitfalls that could easily lead a careless practitioner to wrong results. For example, if one rater does not use one category that another rater has used, SAS does not compute any Kappa at all. This problem is referred to in chapter 1 as the unbalanced-table issue. Even more seriously, if both raters use the same number of different categories, SAS will produce "very wrong" results, because the FREQ procedure will be matching wrong categories to determine agreement. This issue is referred to in chapter 1 as the "Diagonal Issue." There are actually a few other potentially serious problems with weighted Kappa that the author has identified. They are all clearly documented in this book, and a plan for resolving each of them is proposed.

Discourse on the Move is the first book-length exploration of how corpus-based methods can be used for discourse analysis, applied to the description of discourse organization. The primary goal is to bring these two analytical perspectives together: undertaking a detailed discourse analysis of each individual text, but doing so in terms that can be generalized across all texts of a corpus. The book explores two major approaches to this task: ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’. In the ‘top-down’ approach, the functional components of a genre are determined first, and then all texts in a corpus are analyzed in terms of those components. In contrast, textual components emerge from the corpus analysis in the bottom-up approach, and the discourse organization of individual texts is then analyzed in terms of linguistically-defined textual categories. Both approaches are illustrated through case studies of discourse structure in particular genres: fund-raising letters, biology/biochemistry research articles, and university classroom teaching.
