This open access book provides an analysis of contemporary societies and schools shaped by cultural diversity, globalization and migration. This diversity is necessarily reflected in education systems and requires the promotion of intercultural approaches able to improve learning processes and the quality of education. From an international and comparative perspective, this book first presents theoretical and conceptual foundations for seriously considering cultural diversity. The book also compares intercultural approaches and debates generated in countries as diverse as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland and France. Caribbean Discourse in Inclusive Education Volume II “Responding to Learner Diversity and Learner Difficulties” shares selected critical reflections and recommendations on the way educational communities respond to student diversity and difficulties learning. These contexts include the Caribbean, the Diaspora, and beyond. Authors explore issues and strategies for realizing and sustaining the agenda of education for all within primarily, but not limited to, the Caribbean. This book critically examines contemporary educational practices with a children’s rights lens. Through investigating the factors that contribute to (or hinder) the realisation of children’s rights in and through education in different contexts, it discusses how using a rights framework for education furthers the agenda for achieving international educational aims and goals. Using diverse international examples, the book provides a snapshot of the complexity of children’s rights and education. It draws on the expertise of international research teams from Australia, England, Finland, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States, and highlights wide-ranging interpretations of the same mandate across different national contexts. Beginning with a critical overview of the broader context of children’s rights in education, the book explores obligations for States and their representatives, tensions and convergences in implementation, and implications for teaching and learning. Using underutilised educational and theoretical concepts, it contributes to broadening understandings of children’s rights, education and associated theoretical frameworks. Despite a human rights framework emphasising the indivisibility, interrelatedness and interconnectedness of all rights, the ‘right to education’ (Article 28) dominates discussions about children’s rights and education. As such, equally important rights including the ‘aims of education’ (Article 29) are often less considered or absent from the conversation. How can teacher education prepare future teachers for their work in increasingly diverse classrooms? How does the concept of plurilingualism inform language educational policy in different countries? What are the current opportunities and challenges in the domain of internationalisation in teacher education? The contributions to this volume address these questions from different theoretical perspectives, and with a strong emphasis on the actual practices in various classrooms. At a time when simplistic, essentialist, biased, and discriminatory ideologies and practices see a rebirth in public discourse, and represent a risk to education, the contributors here take stock and describe some worthwhile alternatives. The first set of chapters addresses the integration of ethnic, religious, and gender diversity in teacher education colleges. In the second part, the notion of plurilingualism in different educational contexts is explored from a critical sociolinguistic point of view.
