Continuum Mechanics Through the Twentieth Century

Continuum Mechanics Through the Twentieth Century PDF Author: Gerard A Maugin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400763530
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
This overview of the development of continuum mechanics throughout the twentieth century is unique and ambitious. Utilizing a historical perspective, it combines an exposition on the technical progress made in the field and a marked interest in the role played by remarkable individuals and scientific schools and institutions on a rapidly evolving social background. It underlines the newly raised technical questions and their answers, and the ongoing reflections on the bases of continuum mechanics associated, or in competition, with other branches of the physical sciences, including thermodynamics. The emphasis is placed on the development of a more realistic modeling of deformable solids and the exploitation of new mathematical tools. The book presents a balanced appraisal of advances made in various parts of the world. The author contributes his technical expertise, personal recollections, and international experience to this general overview, which is very informative albeit concise.

Book Description

Vibration in Continuous Media

Vibration in Continuous Media PDF Author:
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118613686
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 295

Book Description
Three aspects are developed in this book: modeling, a description of the phenomena and computation methods. A particular effort has been made to provide a clear understanding of the limits associated with each modeling approach. Examples of applications are used throughout the book to provide a better understanding of the material presented.

Mechanical and Thermodynamical Modeling of Fluid Interfaces

Mechanical and Thermodynamical Modeling of Fluid Interfaces PDF Author: Ren‚e Gatignol
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812810625
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
This book constitutes a comprehensive survey of the balance equations for mass, momentum and energy for the interfaces in pure fluids and mixtures. Constitutive laws are presented for many situations in engineering science, and examples are provided, including surface viscosity effects, variable surface tension and vapor recoil. In addition, some extensions of existing theory are given: stretch effect in premixed flames, relaxation zones downstream two-phase shock waves, and effective surface tension for steep gradient zones. Contents: Thermodynamics and Kinematics of Interfaces; Interface Balance Laws; Constitutive Relations Deduced from Linear Irrevesible Thermodynamics for the Two-Dimensional Interfaces; Classical Three-Dimensional Constitutive Relations Deduced from Linear Irreversible Thermodynamics and Their Consequences for Interfaces; Second Gradient Theory Applied to Interfacial Medium; Typical Problems Involving Surface Tensions and Other Surface Properties. Readership: Graduates, physicists, applied mathematicians and engineers seeking classical knowledge in continuum mechanics and thermodynamics, especially in the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.

Mechanics of Continuous Media and Analysis of Structures

Mechanics of Continuous Media and Analysis of Structures PDF Author: R. Valid
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080984614
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
Mechanics of Continuous Media and Analysis of Structures is a six-chapter book that begins by elucidating the mechanics of solid continuous media. The text then describes the finite elements method, which undoubtedly dominates the methods used for structural analysis. Subsequent chapters explain the variational principles in linear elasticity, vibration of linear structure, non-linear deformations, and the shell theory. This book will be valuable to all those who need certain theoretical developments in mechanics, including mechanical engineers, economists, and mathematicians.

Mechanics of Deformable Solids

Mechanics of Deformable Solids PDF Author: Issam Doghri
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662041685
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 587

Book Description
Three subjects of major interest in one textbook: linear elasticity, mechanics of structures in linear isotropic elasticity, and nonlinear mechanics including computational algorithms. After the simplest possible, intuitive approach there follows the mathematical formulation and analysis, with computational methods occupying a good portion of the book. There are several worked-out problems in each chapter and additional exercises at the end of the book, plus mathematical expressions are bery often given in more than one notation. The book is intended primarily for students and practising engineers in mechanical and civil engineering, although students and experts from applied mathematics, materials science and other related fields will also find it useful.
