How can intra-organisational knowledge sharing be analysed and actualised? What should organisations be aware of before implementing knowledge management and sharing programmes? The overall objective of this book is neither to give precise answers nor to propose an exact action plan, but rather to discuss the phenomena of intra-organisational knowledge sharing in its 'complexity', shifting from a one-sided to a holistic view. The holistic approach relates to the contradictive reality of current knowledge management and knowledge sharing activities within organisations, taking up the challenge of analysing the internal process of knowledge sharing from three perspectives: social, economic and cultural. This methodical approach is a kind of 're-construction and re-combination', i.e. analysing and reflecting on existing literature sources, allocating them into theoretical perspectives, studying them comprehensively and synthesising them in a holistic model. The diversity of such perspectives as economic, social and cultural undogmatically widens the debate across disciplines. The main result of this research is the developed holistic model for knowledge sharing within organisations, which reproduces a general guiding framework for organisations, enabling them to analyse and question their knowledge sharing process and structure.

Knowledge has been recognized as the primary source of competitive advantage and long- term success of an organization. Based on this premise, this paper reports the results of an exploratory study on knowledge sharing practices of NESsT, an international nonprofit organization that develops sustainable social enterprises. By reviewing relevant literature about factors that influence knowledge sharing and by conducting interviews with NESsT employees, it could be established that successful knowledge sharing behavior depends on the synergy of four main factors: adequate information technology that facilitates the searching, storing, manipulating, and sharing of a huge amount of information; open organizational structures that allow for dialogue across hierarchical levels and a supportive top management; diverse learning channels to encourage the exchange of both tacit and explicit knowledge; and the employee's ability and willingness to share. Implications for theory and practice are given, as well as specific recommendations for nonprofit organizations.

Although conceptual and qualitative reviews of the organizational knowledge transfer literature have emerged, no study has attempted to summarize previous quantitative empirical findings. As a first step towards that goal, we use meta-analytic techniques to examine how knowledge, organization and network level antecedents differentially impact organizational knowledge transfer. Additionally, we consolidate research on the relationship between knowledge transfer and its consequences. We also demonstrate how the intra- and inter-organizational context, the directionality of knowledge transfers, and measurement characteristics moderate the relationships studied. The knowledge-based view has recently been criticized for overlooking individual-level action and interaction in favor of an over-emphasis on the firm-level capabilities. This paper seeks to respond to that criticism by providing some individual-level explanations for a collective-level phenomenon - intraorganizational knowledge transfer. We suggest that variations in individual ability, motivation and the use of interaction opportunities provided by the organization explain part of the variation found in individuallevel knowledge acquisition and use, and that this has an influence on organizational level knowledge transfer within a firm. More specifically, we find that ability and intrinsic motivation are important drivers of individual level knowledge acquisition and use, while extrinsic motivation has no impact. Furthermore, the extent to which an individual uses interaction opportunities provided by the organization influences knowledge transfer both directly and through a moderator effect with ability and person-to-person interaction.
