Contemporary Regional Development in Africa
Author: Kobena T. Hanson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317160533
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
Contemporary Regional Development in Africa interrogates well-known concerns in the areas of regionalism and economic integration in contemporary Africa, while offering an added uniqueness by highlighting the capacity imperatives of the issues, and proposing critical policy guideposts. The volume juxtaposes a set of ’dynamic’ entanglements - new and micro-regionalism, informal cross-border trade, intra-African and African FDI plus cross-border investments, infrastructure development, science and technology, regional value-chains, conflict management and regional security - with fluid interpretations of regional development. The chapters provide snapshots of the several emerging and complex regionalisms and highlight a set of relevant and often overlapping analyses - drawing on authors’ nuanced and granular understanding of the African landscape. The varied, yet interlinked, nature of issues covered in this study make the book valuable and attractive to academics, researchers, policymakers and development practitioners.

Regional Economic Integration in West Africa
Author: Diery Seck
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3319012827
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 274
Book Description
This book presents a number of key studies pertaining to the most pressing challenges of economic regional integration in West Africa. The issues of monetary coordination, foreign exchange volatility, taxation, savings and macroeconomic convergence are investigated from a regional perspective. The characteristics of West Africa’s trade policy are reviewed and assessed in comparison to that of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The extent to which regional integration can tackle the challenge of unemployment is the focus of studies on labour markets. Development of the private sector and coordination of regional cross-border transportation are examined through the lens of economic collaboration between Arab and African countries. The book provides fresh new answers to persistent development questions and sheds new light on long-held views that are either incomplete or no longer true. It also opens new perspectives on the search for sustainable avenues for Africa’s development. In this regard, it may contribute to the emergence of a new paradigm on Africa’s development process and its science-based, policy-oriented implementation.

Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230513174
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 185
Book Description
Regional integration seems to be thriving everywhere, as the examples of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), the North Atlantic Free Trade Area (NAFTA) and the Southern Common Market will illustrate. More ambitious schemes, such as Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and those for Western hemispheric integration are also underway. How do these trends for integration relate to national development strategies? Structural Transformation and Economic Development
Author: Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317199596
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 230
Book Description
This book examines long-term structural changes and the broad impact on economic development in regional comparative perspectives. The book analyzes data across Africa, Asia and Latin America. It looks at key variables of productivity growth, industrialization, poverty, urbanization, and employment. This book is concerned with understanding structural change dynamics and how it affects job creation, living standards, and the efficiency of productive cities through manufacturing productivity growth that benefits majority of citizens. With empirical evidence from a selected number of developing countries including China, India, Brazil, Nigeria and South Africa, the book attempts to present the considerable structural changes of these countries over the last few decades. It highlights that growth without the expected job creation is one of the distinct features of growth in emerging and developing countries. It suggests that countries may well record economic growth, whether through within sector productivity increase or through structural change, but this may not necessarily lead to employment, an important concern for long-term development.

Transitions in Regional Economic Development
Author: Ivan Turok
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351387782
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 379
Book Description
At a time of extraordinary challenges confronting the world, this book analyses some of the profound changes occurring in the development of cities and regions. It discusses the uncertainties associated with the stalling of hyper-globalization and asks whether this creates opportunities for resurgent regional economies driven by local capabilities, resource efficiencies and domestic production. Theory and evidence on socio-economic and environmental transitions underway in many regions are brought together. Implications of the shifting balance of global power towards emerging economies in the East are explored, along with the consequences of urbanization in the global South for politics and democracy. Dilemmas surrounding migration are also discussed, including whether incomers displace local workers and depress wages, or bring benefits in the form of know-how, new technology and investment. More integrative concepts of the region and theories of regional development are analysed, recognising the role of human capital, knowledge, innovation, finance, infrastructure and institutions. This was originally published as a special issue of Regional Studies.

Dynamics of Regional Integration
Author: Uwe Walz
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642998070
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 214
Book Description
Deepening and enlarging regional integration blocs is high on the political agenda, as can be seen most notably in the last decade of the European in tegration process. The effects of this process have been studied extensively. But, until recently, these studies have been limited to the theoretical anal ysis of static effects of regional integration. The revival of growth theory has, however, in principle provided a set of models and tools which allow to investigate the dynamic effects of regional integration. At the same time, the "new regional economics" (or economic geography) literature allowing to focus on the special features of regional integration and integration blocs has emerged. The aim of this study is to merge endogenous growth approaches with "new regional economics" models in order to investigate various aspects of the long-run effects of regional integration in a dynamic general equilibrium framework. It is needless to say that such an analysis can cover only selected issues and leaves others aside. It is the purpose of the present study, how ever, to look at both types of regional integration: the dynamic effects of a deepening of the integration process as well as of an enlargement of the integration bloc. This is done on the basis of an investigation of empirical regularities of regional developments in an integration bloc (mainly in the European Union).
