In suboptimal listening environments when noise hinders the continuity of the speech, the normal auditory-cognitive system perceptually integrates available speech information and & ldquo;fills in & rdquo; missing information with help from higher level feedback mechanisms. However, individuals with cochlear implants (CIs) find it difficult and effortful to understand interrupted speech compared to their normal hearing (NH) counterparts. Little is known about CI listeners & rsquo; ability to restore missing speech when they are exposed to challenging listening environments. In this dissertation, three experimental paradigms were used to evaluate listeners & rsquo; ability to utilize their acquired linguistic skills in normal hearing individuals using simulated cochlear implant processing and in individuals with cochlear implants. In the first experiment, listeners & rsquo; abilities to use semantic context when speech was intact or interrupted was evaluated under various spectral resolution conditions. The results suggested that higher level processing facilitates speech perception up to a point but it fails to facilitate speech understanding when speech signals are significantly degraded. In the second experiment, high level processing was investigated using the phonemic restoration effect where sentences were interrupted with and without filler noise at different interruption rates. Both groups failed to show top-down restoration, except the CI users showed some amount of higher level processing at the lowest interruption rate. In the third experiment, a gated word recognition task was used and listeners with CIs required comparatively more acoustic-phonetic information to recognize a word than the NH listeners. In the final experiment, when speech was presented in noise, both groups relied significantly on contextual cues to perceive the speech. Overall, the results from successive experiments indicated CI users rely heavily on contextual cues when they are available. However, when they listen to speech with severe degradations, they may not benefit from semantic context as the incoming speech does not provide enough information to trigger top-down processes. If the signal fidelity (spectral resolution) is improved, their benefit from higher level linguistic feedback processes can be maximized.

Listeners can perceive interrupted speech as continuous, provided that the gap is masked by another extraneous sound such as white noise or a cough. This phenomenon, known as the continuity illusion or phonemic restoration, is an adaptive function of our auditory system that facilitates speech comprehension in adverse acoustic situations. In this study, we examined the hypothesis that the effect of music training, as manifested in one's enhanced ability to anticipate envelope variation and thus perceive continuity in degraded music, can transfer to phonemic restoration. We posited that this cross-domain extension is largely due to the overlapping neural networks associated with rhythm processing in the lower-level central auditory system.

The purpose of the Symposium was to provide a meeting place for those working in the field of s·peech perception, whose main in terest is in the study of the perceptual processes in the deco ding of connected speech, hence the title Dynamic Aspects of Speech Perception. It was felt, after the meeting of the 8th ICA in London and the 2nd Speech Communication Seminar in Stockholm, 1974, that there should be an opportunity for an exchange of ideas on this topic with the emphasis on discussion and interpretation, rather than on the presentation of experimental results. The following is a passage from our application for NATO sponsorship: "In the main, the participants in this workshop on the Psychophysics of Speech Perception come from two areas of research: - one area is that of speech perception researc,h, in which the perception of speech sounds is investigated; - the other area is that of psychoacoustics, or auditory psychophysics, in which the perception of simple non-speech sounds, such as pure tones or noise bursts, is investigated, in order to determine the properties of the hearing mechanism. Al though there is widespread agreement among both speech researchers and auditory psychophysicists that there should be a great deal of co-operation between them, the two areas have, generally speaking, remained separate, each with its own research questions, paradigms, and above all, traditions. Psychoacousticians have, so far, continued to investigate the peripheral hearing organ by means of simple sounds, regarding the preoccupations of speech researchers as too many near-empty theories in need of a more solid factual base. Speech perception researchers, on the other hand, have continued to investigate the way human listeners classify vowels and consonants, claiming that psychoacoustics is not concerned with normal, everyday, human perception.

This investigation examined the effects of a visual prompt on speech perception in noise. Hearing in Noise Test (HINT) sentences served as speech stimuli in three different conditions of background noise: interrupted HINT, continuous HINT, and ICRA noise. Participants consisted of 30 adults with normal hearing sensitivity. Results indicated no significant differences in Reception Thresholds for Sentences (RTS) between conditions with or without a visual prompt, however; significant differences between noise routing and noise competitions were indicated. Theoretical, clinical, and research implications are discussed.
