The COVID-19 pandemic has upended a plethora of lives worldwide. Students enrolled in institutions of higher education are not immune to the significant impact of the pandemic, encountering myriads of challenges that lead to poor mental health and academic persistence. The pandemic has also created a disproportionate impact on marginalized students, such as racial, ethnic, and sexual minority students as well as students with disabilities, amplifying inequalities in a time of crisis. Constructs investigated, in this study, included the relationships of college students' risk perception of COVID-19, mental health, protective factors (optimism, help-seeking, social support), and academic persistence in response to the COVID-19 pandemic among 1051 college students, including racial, ethnic, and sexual minority students, students with disabilities, international students, and first-generation college students, from various higher education institutions across the United States. Also examined was the risk perception of COVID-19, mental health, protective factors, and academic persistence in different demographic groups of college students in response to the pandemic, shedding light on the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on marginalized college students in the United States. Results from structural equation modeling revealed that both risk perception of COVID-19 and mental health contributed to academic persistence directly and indirectly through protective factors. The greater risk perceptions of COVID-19 were associated with higher levels of academic persistence among college students. Risk perception of COVID-19 and mental health were found to be negatively associated. Results showed that optimism did not mediate the effect of risk perception on help-seeking behaviors but did fully mediate mental health effects on help-seeking behaviors, suggesting that individuals with higher levels of optimism may not underestimate the risk of the infectious disease and thus reduce health-related behaviors. Findings highlighted the fundamental role of social support in mitigating the deleterious effects of the pandemic to promote academic persistence. Findings from this study also provided empirical evidence for the first time, suggesting the positive effects of risk perception of COVID-19 on protective behaviors as well as academic persistence in U.S. college students. Results from the independent sample t-test revealed that marginalized students were disproportionately affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Racial, ethnic, and sexual minority students and students with disabilities demonstrated less academic persistence, mental health, and social support compared with their peers; meanwhile, they were more likely than their peers to perceive greater risk of COVID-19. The results from structural equation modeling and t-test provided empirical evidence and implications that inform strategic plans at the individual, institutional, community, and policy levels to mitigate the detrimental effects of COVID-19 on college students. Specific implications for higher education leadership, faculty, administrators and stakeholders, mental health providers, professional counselors (e.g., mental health and career counselors), and counselor educators are discussed.

In this thesis, a Pearson product-moment correlation was performed using SPSS to analyze the associations between college health professionals' communicative behaviors (instrumental and affective), students' satisfaction, and students' perceived quality of healthcare. Results showed that college health professionals' communicative behaviors positively associated with students' satisfaction and students' perceived quality of healthcare. The implication is that college health professionals need to pay careful attention to how they interact with students at student health service because their interactions can potentially cause either high or low patient satisfaction or perception of quality of healthcare among students. Additionally, this thesis used anxiety/uncertainty management (AUM) theory to investigate how students managed their anxiety and uncertainty about their health issues when they interacted with college health professionals at student health service. The thesis found that students reported using trust, relaxation, and information seeking/giving as strategies to deal with their anxiety and uncertainty about their health issues before and during their interactions with college health professionals.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether perceived social support was associated with self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors, and whether self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors predicts academic success for college students. Gender differences in perceived social support were also examined. Participants were undergraduate students at a large public university in the Southeast enrolled in an introductory psychology course. Data collection was completed through the use of a demographic form, the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List-College Version (Cohen, Mermelstein, Kamarck, & Hoberman, 1985), The Self-Reported Abilities for Health Practices Scale (Becker, Stuifbergen, Oh, & Hall, 1993), and the acquisition of participants' college GPA from official university records. Perceived social support was found to have a significant positive association with self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors. Significant positive associations accounting for at least 10% of the variance in the dependent variable were found between the total score of perceived social support and the mean composite score of self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors, perceived belonging support and self-efficacy for exercise, perceived appraisal support and self-efficacy for psychological well-being, and perceived appraisal support and self-efficacy for responsible health practices. Gender differences in perceived social support were also found with females reporting greater perceived social support. Females reported greater perceived appraisal, tangible, belonging, and self-esteem support. No relationship was found in this study between self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors and academic success. The results from this study may be useful to college students looking to improve their health and for health professionals working to promote health in the college student population. Choosing a social support intervention is likely to increase self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors, which have been linked to their actual implementation (Von Ah, Ebert, Ngamvitroj, Park, & Duck-Hee, 2004).

Depression and anxiety are relatively common among college students and research suggests that risk perceptions may be modulated by these mental health conditions. In addition, studies have demonstrated that higher perception of risk predicts more frequent practice of preventative health behaviors, and this relationship may also be modulated by depression and anxiety. The present study examined the relationship between these factors in the context of COVID-19. Using survey data from undergraduate students, risk perceptions about COVID-19, self-reported practice of COVID-19 preventative behaviors, and their relationship were compared between those with and without the common mental health conditions of Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Results indicated that risk perceptions predicted self-reported use of preventative health behaviors across groups, and those with MDD and/or GAD had relatively greater affective than cognitive risk perceptions related to COVID-19. Critically, however, those with MDD and/or GAD did not show enhanced self-reported use of preventative health behaviors to avoid contracting or spreading COVID-19. In addition, mental health condition status did not modulate the relationship between risk perception and preventative health behaviors. Together, these findings suggest that while affective risk perceptions related to COVID-19 may be elevated in college students with common mental health conditions, perceived risk does not translate into behaviors that will reduce their risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19.
