Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics

Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics PDF Author: Gavriel Salvendy
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470528389
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1754

Book Description
The fourth edition of the Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics has been completely revised and updated. This includes all existing third edition chapters plus new chapters written to cover new areas. These include the following subjects: Managing low-back disorder risk in the workplace Online interactivity Neuroergonomics Office ergonomics Social networking HF&E in motor vehicle transportation User requirements Human factors and ergonomics in aviation Human factors in ambient intelligent environments As with the earlier editions, the main purpose of this handbook is to serve the needs of the human factors and ergonomics researchers, practitioners, and graduate students. Each chapter has a strong theory and scientific base, but is heavily focused on real world applications. As such, a significant number of case studies, examples, figures, and tables are included to aid in the understanding and application of the material covered.

Virtual Worlds

Virtual Worlds PDF Author: Jean-Claude Heudin
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540450165
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 325

Book Description
Virtual Worlds 2000 is the second in a series of international scientific conferences on virtual worlds held at the International Institute of Multimedia in Paris La Défense (Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci). The term "virtual worlds" generally refers to virtual reality applications or experi ences. We extend the use of these terms to describe experiments that deal with the idea of synthesizing digital worlds on computers. Thus, virtual worlds could be de fined as the study of computer programs that implement digital worlds. Constructing such complex artificial worlds seems to be extremely difficult to do in any sort of complete and realistic manner. Such a new discipline must benefit from a large amount of work in various fields: virtual reality and advanced computer graphics, artificial life and evolutionary computation, simulation of physical systems, and more. Whereas virtual reality has largely concerned itself with the design of 3D immersive graphical spaces, and artificial life with the simulation of living organisms, the field of virtual worlds, is concerned with the synthesis of digital universes considered as wholes, with their own "physical" and "biological" laws.

Poiesis and Enchantment in Topological Matter

Poiesis and Enchantment in Topological Matter PDF Author: Xin Wei Sha
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262019515
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
A groundbreaking conception of interactive media, inspired by continuity, field, and process, with fresh implications for art, computer science, and philosophy of technology. In this challenging but exhilarating work, Sha Xin Wei argues for an approach to materiality inspired by continuous mathematics and process philosophy. Investigating the implications of such an approach to media and matter in the concrete setting of installation- or event-based art and technology, Sha maps a genealogy of topological media—that is, of an articulation of continuous matter that relinquishes a priori objects, subjects, and egos and yet constitutes value and novelty. Doing so, he explores the ethico-aesthetic consequences of topologically creating performative events and computational media. Sha's interdisciplinary investigation is informed by thinkers ranging from Heraclitus to Alfred North Whitehead to Gilbert Simondon to Alain Badiou to Donna Haraway to Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Sha traces the critical turn from representation to performance, citing a series of installation-events envisioned and built over the past decade. His analysis offers a fresh way to conceive and articulate interactive materials of new media, one inspired by continuity, field, and philosophy of process. Sha explores the implications of this for philosophy and social studies of technology and science relevant to the creation of research and art. Weaving together philosophy, aesthetics, critical theory, mathematics, and media studies, he shows how thinking about the world in terms of continuity and process can be informed by computational technologies, and what such thinking implies for emerging art and technology.

Book Description
APCHI 2004 was the sixth Asia-Paci?c Conference on Computer-Human Int- action, and was the ?rst APCHI to be held in New Zealand. This conference series provides opportunities for HCI researchers and practitioners in the Asia- Paci?c and beyond to gather to explore ideas, exchange and share experiences, and further build the HCI networkin this region.APCHI 2004wasa truly int- national event, with presenters representing 17 countries. This year APCHI also incorporated the ?fth SIGCHI New Zealand Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction. A total of 69 papers were accepted for inclusion in the proceedings – 56 long papers and 13 short papers. Submissions were subject to a strict, double-blind peer-review process. The research topics cover the spectrum of HCI, including human factors and ergonomics, user interfacetools and technologies, mobile and ubiquitous computing, visualization, augmented reality, collaborative systems, internationalization and cultural issues, and more. APCHI also included a d- toral consortium, allowing 10 doctoral students from across the globe to meet and discuss their work in an interdisciplinary workshop with leading researchers and fellow students. Additionally, ?ve tutorials were o?ered in association with the conference.
