Book Description
We explore the relation between international financial integration and the level of entrepreneurial activity in a country. Using a unique data set of approximately 24 million firms in nearly 100 countries in 1999 and 2004, we find suggestive evidence that international financial integration has been associated with higher levels of entrepreneurial activity. Our results are robust to using various proxies for entrepreneurial activity such as entry, size, and skewness of the firm-size distribution; controlling for level of economic development, regulation, institutional constraints, and other variables that might affect the business environment; and using different empirical specifications. We further explore various channels through which international financial integration can affect entrepreneurship (a foreign direct investment channel and a capital/credit availability channel) and provide consistent evidence to support our results.

International Financial Integration and Entrepreneurial Firm Dynamics

Book Description
We explore the relation between international financial integration and the level of entrepreneurial activity in a country. We use a unique firm level data set of approximately 24 million firms in nearly 100 countries in 2004 and 1999, which enables us to present both cross-country and industry level evidence. We establish robust cross-country correlations between increased international financial integration and the activity of entrepreneurs using various proxies for entrepreneurial activity such as entry, size, and skewness of the firm-size distribution and de jure and de facto measures of international capital integration. We then explore causal channels through which foreign capital may encourage entrepreneurship. We find evidence that entrepreneurial activity in industries which are more reliant on external finance is disproportionately affected by international financial integration, suggesting that foreign capital may improve access to capital either directly or through improved domestic financial intermediation. Second we find that entrepreneurial activity is higher in industries which have a large share of foreign firms or in vertically linked industries.

Book Description
We explore the relation between international financial integration and the level of entrepreneurial activity in a country. We use a unique firm-level data set in a broad sample of developed and developing countries, which enables us to present both cross-country and industry-level evidence. We find a positive robust correlation between de jure and de facto measures of international financial integration and proxies for entrepreneurial activity such as entry, size, and skewness of the firm-size distribution. We then explore potential channels through which foreign capital may encourage entrepreneurship. We find that entrepreneurial activity is higher in industries which have a large share of foreign firms in vertically linked industries. Second, we find that entrepreneurial activity in industries which are more reliant on external finance is disproportionately affected by international financial integration.

Financial Integration, Entrepreneurial Risk and Global Dynamics

Financial Integration, Entrepreneurial Risk and Global Dynamics PDF Author: George-Marios Angeletos
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1437980244
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 42

Book Description
How does financial integration impact capital accumulation, current-account dynamics, and cross-country inequality? This paper investigates this question within a two-country, general-equilibrium, incomplete-markets model that focuses on the importance of idiosyncratic entrepreneurial risk -- a risk that introduces, not only a precautionary motive for saving, but also a wedge between the interest rate and the marginal product of capital. This friction provides a simple resolution to the empirical puzzle that capital often fails to flow from the rich or slow-growing countries to the poor or fast-growing ones, and a distinct set of policy lessons regarding the intertemporal costs and benefits of capital-account liberalization. Illus. A print on demand report.

Financial Integration in the European Monetary Union

Financial Integration in the European Monetary Union PDF Author: Sławomir Ireneusz Bukowski
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429575610
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 126

Book Description
This book introduces readers to the world of international financial markets and their integration on a global and regional scale. The author presents the theoretical and practical issues concerning the processes of financial market integration, with a particular focus on the monetary union. The empirical research results are based on econometric modeling, thus simplifying them for a non-specialist audience, who can instead concentrate on the author’s conclusions, which comprise the results of these complicated research methods. The author outlines the role and functions of financial markets in the economy, in particular the relationship between financial intermediaries and financial markets and tackles the question of integration of new EU member countries’ financial markets within the eurozone. The integration of financial markets in an international context is inevitable, and the author argues that we must learn how to benefit from it from in terms of economic growth. This book will be a valuable resource for students of economics and finance, particularly those studying financial management and international business and finance, as well as professionals in these fields. Further, this book will be of interest to anyone looking to discover more about the problems of globalization and the integration of financial markets into the modern economy.

International Financial Integration

International Financial Integration PDF Author: Chair in International Business and Finance Lars Oxelheim, Ph.D.
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783642612947
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
There is widespread agreement in the current social and economic debate that the integration of nations is growing worldwide. Many structural signs in society suggest the same. Integration has become a catch word in the preparations for the internal market of the EC, and a keynote in the debate on association of non-community European countries. Integration has also become a catch word in the process of transformation going on in Eastern Europe. But when we turn to the question of how this integration should be defined and measured, there is very little consensus. Instead, there are numerous problems, not only about how to measure integration but even about how to define it. International Financial Integration discusses the importance and the implications of this particular type of integration and then looks at the most important problems connected with measuring it. Different ways of measuring as well as the potential autonomy for national monetary policy are evaluated, and an alternative way of measurement is elaborated and advocated. All methods are discussed in detail and demonstrated in an extensive empirical analysis.
