Book Description
Excerpt from Internal Communication Systems in American Business Structures: A Framework to Aid Appraisal I come to the issue of appraisal not as an archivist, but as a user of records. My interests, however, are closely related to those of archivists, as my participation in the Bentley Library's Research Seminar in the Appraisal of Modern Historical Documentation suggests. As a specialist in business communication, I am studying the evolution of internal communication, especially written communication, in American businesses during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thus most of the documents an archivist appraises in late nineteenth and early twentieth century business collections are the physical manifestations of the system I am studying. Archivists' interests, then, frequently coincide with mine. Moreover, my study provides a typology of organizational structures and their communication systems that can serve as a framework to aid appraisal of modern business records as well as earlier ones. Before introducing that typology, let me describe some assumptions behind my research. Internal communication may be viewed as a dynamic system with three interrelated components: organizational structure, communication technology, and the communications (written or oral) themselves. The communication in an organization both reflects and embodies the organizational structure. Lines of authority are usually lines of communication, as well. Closing an Era

Closing an Era PDF Author: Richard J. Cox
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313001456
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
The importance of records in modern society is explored by re-examining some of the historical antecedents for critical functions in the modern records professions. The motivation for writing this book comes from a conviction of the importance of records and records professionals in organizations and society, as well as the need to possess a stronger sense of the events, trends, people, debates, and controversies producing the modern records professions. Archivists and records managers have tended to discount the importance of their historical antecedents, ignoring the fact that many of the current debates and issues before the profession are not new but embedded in the historical evolution of the records professions. Re-examining some of the historical origins helps records professionals to re-examine their mission to manage records for the benefit of organizations and of all of society. Such re-evaluation also helps to remind records professionals and others that the concerns generated by new electronic recordkeeping technologies are not new at all but built deep within the fabric of traditional records creation and administration.

Book Description
This book reassesses international functionalism as an approach to global politics. Functionalism has been marginalized as simply a pre-scientific precursor to regional integration theory. In fact, functionalism provides a global view of states and international organizations working towards a peaceful and constructive world order through cooperative relationships across borders to satisfy human needs. Chapters examine the early development of functionalism and apply functionalist insights to issues, problems and conflicts in contemporary global governance.
